Track Review – Flying Lotus “Never Catch Me” ft. Kendrick Lamar
By: Retro P
Many pondered where and how Flying Lotus’ sound would evolve following the release of his latest studio album, When The Quiet Comes (2012/Warp). The release of the latest single, “Never Catch Me” ft. Kendrick Lamar from the album You’re Dead! (2014/Warp) shows FlyLo expanding upon the neo-jazz feel of Quiet. The track starts immediately with a buttery soft piano instrumentation that shifts into frantic drums aspersed with a haunting melodic chant. Thereafter comes Kendrick rapping in a much-afflicted sounding voice about inner pain and the want to leave his body. “This is that outta body experience” a line made more poignant when the listener takes into account the single’s art, which depicts a fabulously drawn skeleton emerging from the skin of a person. The soft piano stays throughout the song but the accompanying drums only get more manic as the song progresses, adding to the franticness of the song’s atmosphere. Much like Quiet, the instrumentation is very organic and flowing. This is a promising view into the forthcoming LP, and with confirmed guest stars such as Snoop Dogg and Herbie Hancock, I can hardly contain my excitement.
You’re Dead!is out October 7th in the U.S. and October 6th in the UK via Warp.
