Artist: Kiyotaka Sugiyama & Omega Tribe Album: Another Summer Year: 1985 Omega Tribe are a firm favourite amongst city pop fans; accessible in every way, they are often one of the first bands a city pop fan listens to. Another Summer is their fourth album and featured a slightly more synth driven sound than previous albums. Omega Tribe was technically a project formed by producer Koichi Fujita, with the band's lineup often changing over time. The Sugiyama era was more or less the band's first iteration, consisting of Kiyotaka Sugiyama, Shinji Takashima, Toshitsugu Nishihara, Takao Oshima, and Keiichi Hiroishi. A sixth member, Kenji Yoshida, left the band during Another Summer's production. Also featured on the album is songwriter and arranger Tetsuji Hayashi, lyricists Masako Arikawa, Yasushi Akimoto, Kumiko Aoki, and Chinfa Kang. Sugiyama also wrote music for two songs, with Nishihara and Takashima writing a song each. Makoto Matsushita and Ken Shiguma also arranged two songs each. The album opens with Route 134, an energetic song that's sure to lift your spirits. Track 2 is Dear Breeze, a sweet mid-tempo song that true to its name is quite breezy. Track 3 is Futari no Natsu Monogatari ~Never Ending Summer~ (Our Summer Story ~Never Ending Summer~). The album's lead single (as shown on the LP's hype sticker), it's a catchy song that's one of the band's most popular. The first half of the album closes with Toi Hitomi (Faraway Eyes), a somewhat wistful ballad. The second half opens with Scramble Cross, a slightly forlorn song about a man led on by a woman. Next is Mayonaka no Screen Board (Midnight Screen Board), then Ai no Shinkirō (Mirage of Love). Track 8 is You're a Lady, I'm a Man, a duet with fellow city pop singer Rajie. The album closes with ballad The End Of The River, a mellow song and a nice ending to everything. If you like city pop with a pop sound, Another Summer is a solid choice. The album is available to stream on Spotify and purchase on iTunes, and physical copies are cheap and easy to find.
