Sneak peek of (part one of) Radiovore :)
He tastes like sweat and sickness and metal, the same nauseating taste that eventually filled his mouth when he'd taped down the camera button. Radiation. Not quite the horrible cloying copper of blood, but not that far off, either.
Simon screws his eyes shut, sucks in a deep breath through his nose. He has to be careful, Jack is in a fragile enough state already. Tipping his head back, he tries not to shudder as the limp form slides towards the back of his mouth. This just feels wrong, even if he knows it's the only real option. The Captain won't let someone irreplaceable die. And it's his fault Jack's in this condition.
If he didn't do it of his own volition, they'd probably just drug him and do it anyway. Despite what Ava said.
With a faint whine he swallows once, twice, and then shivers at the feeling of something solid sliding down his throat. The taste lingers, even as he feels the weight slipping beneath his collarbone, into his chest. It feels like swallowing a too-big bite of food, a stretch that’s almost painful with nothing to do but wait it out. And then-
He fails to bite back the breathy whimper that escapes when he feels a weight slide into his core. Feels heavier than in his hand, even though he knows that's impossible. Dense and warm, radiating out like foggy memories of eating stew when he was little. How the heat warmed him from the inside.
It makes him feel nauseous. But the next realization is worse.
For the first time in years, he feels satisfied. Like he won't be hungry again in an hour or two. He clamps a hand over his mouth, breathing through his nose and forcing himself to swallow the overwhelming urge to gag.
“I, uh. I did it.”
CHAPTER TWO SNEAK PEEK
Who would win: electrical engineer or child soldier who's been doing manual labor and getting in prison fights for 16 years
“Don't ffffucking touch me!” David hisses, one hand held out to ward him off and the other scrambling for the door handle. Simon just watches, running his thumb over his fingertips. Gaze flicking from the door handle to the other man's face, wide-eyed and pale.
“Captain gave an order.” But he doesn't move, still seated against the wall with his arm propped up on one knee. Watching him yank at the handle. It's locked, of course. He doesn't get free roam of the ship. “It's not going to open. I've tried.”
“Of course it's not—do you really think we're stupid enough to let the Butcher of Eden walk around freely?” David snaps back. Simon tenses, hand balling into a fist and jaw clenching.
“Don't. Call me that.” He growls, glaring up at the other man, body coiled like a spring.
David just scoffs. “What? It's true. I mean, how many people have you killed, B-”
Simon's on his feet and across the room like a shot, slamming the man back against the door with one arm pressed against his throat and his other hand pinning his wrist in place. He bares his teeth in a snarl, glaring down his nose through his hair.
“I. Said. Stop.”
Height chart for Radiovore
Simon is a big guy. So is David but David is a lot lankier.
Plus scale when the crew is smalled. Miniscule.
I remember a bit in chapter 1 about simon being taller than anyone he’d encountered on the ship so the image of him managing to jumpscare people is amusing
Turning around and the tallest quietest scariest guy ever is looming over you (doesn’t even realise he’s doing it) yeah I’d jump too
Yes, Simon is 6'4. He's definitely the tallest person there, but David is just barely shorter than him at 6'3.
Yeah that's about what life is like for the crew of the Calvary. He does apologize when he does it! But he keeps forgetting to make noise on purpose so it keeps happening.
Do you have any plans for the radiovore series? Or are you just locked in on the main story for now
I love the way you write the character interactions sm, you could write them just sitting around a table and talking and it’d be peak
Also unrelated but I hope we get to hear more about Eden, I imagine they’re as similarly uninformed about the coi as the coi is about them
I do have some little side thoughts (one that's really bugging me is a little chat between David and Jack, plus just. funny shit based around the fact that Simon is kind of a weird guy, even without the shifter stuff. he will regularly jumpscare people on complete accident because he is very quiet, very fast, and assumes everyone else is as hypervigilant as he is) but as of right now I wanna try to get the main story finished first.
There's a whole lot of thoughts about Eden rattling around in my dome, but since Simon hasn't been there in sixteen years I'm not sure how much will end up actually in the story or not. One thing I will go ahead and drop is that he was already claustrophobic before the Iron Lung and Eden absolutely had something to do with it :)
also tyyy every time someone says they like the story I literally turn into a sopping wet animal like "whuh?? people think my writing is good????". Curse of having been in a very small fandom mostly composed of teenagers for the past 3 years I guess. I love every one of these idiots and will be taking protective custody of their single collective braincell. Ava is the only one allowed to use it until they stop being dumbasses.
I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me before that david probably thinks jack is already dead until simon says something about it,
My friend is dead - bad
‘He’s awake’ - that’s worse!
Rotating david pov in my mind on loop
Oh he definitely. Does not think anything GOOD is happening, that's for sure! Like he's vaguely aware that shifters can swallow people safely. But also everyone in the COI knows Edenites are cannibals.
Friends since before the rapture and she’s gonna lock him in a room with simon until what has to be done is done uh oh…
idk what would be worse her trying to explain and him refusing but being shoved in there anyway, or her deciding to not really explain because she knows he’d never agree auughghghhhh
and poor simon stuck in the middle of all this still feeling like something just being used somebody help him!!!!
She's willing to do whatever it takes to keep her crew safe. It's what makes her a good captain.
David does get some explanation. But there's not really ANY amount of explanation that would make someone willing to be eaten alive by someone they fully believe is a murderous cannibal, so.
