He went off on his own and sacrificed himself just because some guy he was friends with wanted a safer country??? It wasn't even necessary it was just kind of helpful??? That's some tragic yaoi right there. I bet his absence cast a shadow even as Artheir got a wife and kids, that he would occasionally think of his friend and be like "wow he was so good to me..." And his wife would be like phew thank goodness he hasn't realised it yet because otherwise he would be GONE to the cave or wherever it was, with no thought for his family.
