Deal of Chaos (Loki for President)
I decided to write a part 2 to the Mysterious Stranger. Here you go!
The wind blows. Swaying a cage that hangs over a pit, deep in the forests of Northumbria. A man coughs, his body beaten and battered but his heart still full of life. He knows that this battle will not be won. His whole raiding party was defeated, he is the only survivor. Yet his name shall echo through history and his sons shall have their revenge. He knows they are the ones to truly conquer England.
Halfdan the oldest, the cunning warrior and great leader of Vikings. Bjorn Ironside, his second born, he is the quiet one but no weapon has pierced his skin. Ubba, the boy is the wisest and most patient. A cunning warrior. Sigurd Snake in the Eye, a great axmen and faithful companion to his brothers and finally his youngest son Ivar the Boneless. He is the greatest warrior of all his sons, he may crawl on the ground and have to be carried into battle but he never loses and his strategy is the greatest of all Vikings. And he has a warrior’s heart.
The sons of Ragnar shall have their revenge and conquer England. They shall make the Saxson Kings pay for the death of their father. The older man remembers a conversation on a beach back in Sweden many years ago when he was just a young Prince, not even married yet. The god Loki had given him an ultimatum, that he could have fame but his death would be the choice of the god of mischief. Well it looks like the god of mischief wanted him to die in a cage.
Ragnar turns as he hears the sounds, hearing the soldiers hoisting the cage a bit higher. He turns his head, seeing King Aelle there, standing in his fancy clothes. What a wimp these English Kings are. He sees the group of soldiers along with a large crowd of people gathered. He breathes deeply, closing his blue eyes for a moment. He does not fear death. His eyes follow through the crowd until he spots a familiar man. Wearing a monk’s robe, yet the face is unmistakable. There stands Loki, a wide grin on his face, his green eyes bright.
“Well Ragnar…today is the day I collect my dues. Today is the day you die, not the typical way out for a Viking…but I like this death. I have carefully considered this over the years. Thought of all the various ways for you to go out and this…why this is going to be told for centuries…even millennia.”
Loki laughs as he circles the pit. Ragnar watching him. Not even paying attention to any of the words that King Aelle says.
“How am I going to die Loki? Am I going to die with an axe in my hand?”
He asks the god, the people in the crowd thinking he is raving mad as he speaks to one of his gods.
“Your pagan gods are false barbarian!”
King Aelle yells to him, Ragnar sneers at him in his cage. Loki turns to look at the King. He is not visible to him and laughs a bit.
“Look at that pompous pig…he shall be a glorious bloody eagle in due time.”
Ragnar feels the cage begin to shift, his eyes widen and he starts to slightly feel the beginning of fear. The fear of the unknown. He looks back at Loki, the hod has a smile as he moves to sit at the edge of the pit, looking directly up at Ragnar.
“Your death will be unlike any Viking.”
The cage door opens, Ragnar falling out slamming into the cold ground around him. He gasps as he almost feels the wind knocked out of him. Before he quickly moves, seeing snakes, so many snakes he cannot count slithering around him.
“My sons shall have Revenge! You hear that King Aelle. My sons will kill you!”
He watches as the snakes move, lashing out and starting to bite him. Ragnar closes his eyes, biting his lip, not wanting to scream or show weakness. Each bite burning his skin…his heart racing.
“Loki…”
He opens his eyes, the great Ragnar Lothbrok is dying. Yet there stands his god holding him.
“I would never leave you Ragnar. Now let go…we have so many more adventures. We must prepare your sons…to bring chaos to this land.”
Loki smiles and Ragnar smiles with him. Bringing chaos and glory…now that was an afterlife.
