PSA on rag trees or clootie wells
If you’re going to tie a rag to a tree, please make sure whatever material you’re using is organic in origin. I’ve seen a lot of rag trees lately where the rags are quite clearly made out of synthetic materials, polyester in particular. Polyester is a plastic and takes thousands of years to degrade, so in addition to this basically just being plastic pollution, it is also useless in its magical application too.
Also bear in mind that magical tools are meant to hold a psychic charge and that synthetic materials don’t do this well at all. Use something like natural wool, cotton or even paper as it will degrade better and won’t harm the tree.
Re: wishing trees -- there are literally tons of these in my area and while I’m aware it’s not especially harmful in stumps or dead trees, putting coins in living trees is very harmful. Please don’t do it.
I’m just pointing this out because most Pagans (like me) believe that stewardship of nature is a spiritual practice. Please respect the Earth in your work.
