Cara sat diligently on the porch of her home, in the same spot she had been in for hours, staring at the same screen, for hours. She hadn’t even noticed the sun beginning to set overhead in the sky. For the past hours she had been going through countless blogs, articles, list, videos, anything she could think of that had tips on college life. Cara was anxiety prone, very anxiety prone. Tomorrow would be the day she would move out of her small town and embark on the adventure that is college life. The girl was a mess.
Sure, she had been on vacations, done summer programs, been on retreats, but she always came back home. Cara loved her hometown, it is all she had ever known. The people in it had molded her into the person she had become and she was glad for it, of course it would be hard to imagine leaving it. As much as she talked with her friends of big city living, she hadn’t imagined the day would creep upon her so soon.
“You’ve been staring at your laptop all day.” She didn’t even need to look up to tell who the voice belonged to that stood over her. A small smile creeped over her stressed face as she looked up, her eyes being the only thing visible as the laptop blocked the rest. “Hvitserk, what is it to you?” She asked raising an eyebrow as he sat next to her.
Scratching the back of his neck, he slowly closed her screen grabbing the laptop from her. “You know, there is no use in stressing it. The only way to know what college is going to be like is to experience it.” He shook his head placing her laptop down on the other side of him. “Well,” she took a deep breath looking over her close friend, “that is easy for you to say, I don’t think you worry about anything Hvitty.” Hvitserk let out a low laugh, a goofy smile spreading across his face at her remarks.
“Yes, and you worry enough for the both of us. So why should I?” His statement gained a laugh from the both of them. Laughs that were soon followed by silence from both of them. They knew, this would be the last time in a while they would be both in the same place. Cara’s eyes focused on the sun setting over head, while Hvitserk’s eyes focused on Cara.
He had told her he would come by sometime that day to say goodbye, he had to leave with his family early tomorrow to get to his freshman orientation on time, he would be gone by the time she got ready to leave. Truthfully, he had come to talk to her about something much more. His feelings. It was true, Hvitserk didn’t worry about much, but he worried about Cara a lot. They had always been together, best friends. They balanced each other out, his carefree ways with her overthinking ones. In the past few years he had come to the realization his feelings for her were much stronger than he had thought.
“Will you miss it?” She spoke, finally breaking the silence that had fallen between them. “Miss what?” He furrowed his eyebrows some shaking himself out of his thoughts. “Being able to see this everyday, this beautiful sunset in this exact place. I will.” She sighed softly staring into the sky before them. Hvitserk shook his head some. “No, the sun sets everywhere. I don’t think it’s the sun set, I think it’s who you watch it with.” He spoke glancing over her again, taking in all her features in that moment.
Cara smiled some breaking her gaze to look at her friend. “Oh Hvitserk, always with the right thing to say. How will I go on without you?” She nudged him playfully, noticing a more serious look on his face. “Not sure, I guess you’ll find out soon enough.” He smiled some looking back at her. Before she could respond he continued.
“I actually, um, came here to talk to you about something more serious.” Looking down he played with his fingers some, not completely sure how to address such a topic. She laughed a little noticing he was getting a tad nervous, “Okay, talk away then.” She adjusted her body so she was facing him more.
“We’ve been friends for who knows how long, and now, tomorrow. Tomorrow we go, and I’ve just been thinking a lot more than usual. About everything, and a lot about you Cara. Us, I mean..” He let out a frustrating sigh, looking down at his hands before looking back at her as it seemed she had fixated her stare from the sky to him. “I might be a little late on this, but, I have a lot of feelings for you. Feelings best friends don’t have for each other.” Feeling a weight off his chest he searched her face for a reaction, and he got none.
For so long, Cara had felt some of the same feelings for Hvitserk. But Hvitserk was Hvitserk, he acted like he was in love with everyone. So she never thought much of it, and had long ago brushed the feelings aside. And now, as they are about to leave he finally says something. Standing up she looked down at him, a confused facial expression resting on her. “Fuck Hvitserk. Why now? Why would you tell me this now?” Her voice rose some feeling her heart rate speed up.
He stood to meet her, “I didn’t know how else to tell-” she cut over him. “No, you can’t just drop something like this on me and then leave. What do you expect me to do with this information? What did you want me to say?” She looked at him as he searched himself for an answer, one he didn’t have. Cara laughed sarcastically, feeling the tears whelp in her eyes. “Of course you don’t know what you expected. I’m sorry Hvitserk, I can’t do this. Not now.” She grabbed her laptop from the porch floor and began to head for the door.
“Cara, I didn’t mean to drop this on you like this. I just didn’t want us to leave without me telling you.” He followed after her, his words falling on deaf ears. “Yeah well, you told me.” She wiped her eye looking at him one more time, maybe, she thought, she was being dramatic or maybe it was the pressure of so much happening and changing at once.Or perhaps it was that she had felt the same way for so long, waited for so long, that it was finally too late.
Opening the front of her door some, she looked at the boy before her one more time. Forcing a small smile to fall on her lips. “Goodbye, Hvitserk.” And with that she opened her front door and closed it behind her.
He stood there for a moment, before turning around to make his way down the porch, by the time he got back to his house Hvitserk looked up at the sky. The sun had finally gone down. His last sunset at home.
The last sunset.
I may do a part two, who knows
