Disposable Black Girlfriend Trope in Tv Shows
MOODBOARDS: LOLA RHODES, RAINA THORPE, AGNES ANDREWS, NELLY YUKI (GOSSIP GIRL)
Happy Black History Month to all the Black Women in the Gossip Girl universe
yeah. exactly. you get it.
cause like. these girls are a chance for chuck and william to start fresh because they don't know their past (chuck with assaulting women and william poisoning lily). yeah, there was eva with chuck, but she didn't last, so raina seemed like another shot at finding love and not fucking up, especially that chuck and raina had similar childhoods of growing up in hotels and only knowing their fathers and nothing about their mothers. literally chuck says "You Are Sacred To Me" to raina when she lashes at him for his behavior towards lily and screws it All Up.
for william, lola didn't know everything that happened before she arrived. she just wanted to know who her dad was. and well... it was his chance to start over with her because it seemed "too late" to start one with serena. even though she continuously begged to have a relationship with him, and he just simply refused.
and though I wish a blair/raina dynamic could've formed (because I wanted scenes with rains interacting with someone who wasn't her love interest or her dad, especially another woman). this show likely would've had blair be mean to raina for No Reason just like she was with eva, but being microaggressive about (I mean, which wouldn't be the first time tbh, re: most of blair's interactions towards vanessa). that and the way they handled serena/lola's dynamic with serena being absolutely awful and cruel to lola that was fueled by her insecurities of how lola can be an it girl without partying and doing drugs + easily obtaining a relationship with their dad because this show hates women!!!!! and hates women being friends with each other!!!!!
(I could also go on a whole tangent of serena wanting a relationship with lola at first as being a do over with jenny in a way, but that's for another discussion)
yess!!!
okay so, gossip girl is a misogynistic show, and within its narrative, blair and serena are trapped being relegated to the men in their lives no matter what they've done. but blair and serena are also supposed to be the girls who are always left. the girls who struggle to trust and love and are continuously let down by the ones that are supposed to love them.
and then comes along these girls. smart, hardworking, new, family. raina is the modern businesswoman with a present, proud dad that is almost always by her side, would never leave her alone. she has a sense of self worth, that blair can't put a price on. chuck can't even make a dinner for her, but he's tracking down raina's mom and making all these promises. lola is the smart girl, living her life with a purpose. and yeah, her parents might be awful and her mom may be an even more deceiving mother than lily - serena hardly disagrees - but lola will never have wonder if the front door is open for her or be the one chasing her mother for her love (or father, who proves time and time that he's capable of being a father but will never be one to her).
because yes, they're trapped within a terrible narrative, but they're also trapped in their own cycle.
I LOVE That they(Nate very much there for this) promises Russell that they won't tell RAINA....BUT then literally...a few hours later....NATE is all like "YOUR DAD killed your mom" to Raina
oh Nate

@vanderwoodlings mmc blair and eric's dynamic or nate and raina's dynamic
You sure you don't wanna give him one more chance? I told you, I've dated guys like Chuck my whole life. I think I'm done with business in bed and portfolio pillow talk. I want my day of firsts with you.
