“This is a side of Aphrodite’s Child far removed from their most famous record, 666. It’s like a cross between The Moody Blues and The Bee Gees, but in a good way. Mid-60s light psychedelic pop. The stretch from these earlier hits to their masterpiece 666 is akin to Abba releasing The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. None of this is meant as a criticism however, I like Abba, The Bee Gees and The Moody Blues. And I like this. It’s really very good progressive pop, refracted through a mildly psychedelic kaleidoscope. . Rain and Tears was their biggest hit, doing pretty well in most of Euro-land (if not their native Greece). It borrows liberally from Pachelbel’s Canon. They may well have been the first to do this, but they certainly weren’t the last. Its been borrowed from liberally since by a range of artists, from The Farm, to Kylie Minogue to the Pet Shop Boys and Ralph McTell...” .
