It's a strange thought, the sort of thought Fitz doesn't generally allow himself, because the thought is the sort that happens to fussy English literature students and drowsy writers.
But she really is, his mind protests as he regards the woman sitting alone at a table in the back of the cafe. She just looks like someone who could exist in any one spot as if she had been their forever.
He orders his coffee and approaches her, quietly, respectfully, and asks, "Is the seat across from you taken?"
"I'm not saving it for anyone, if that's what you're asking," she replies.
"Then would you like company?" he says. "Or are you doing well enough on your own, miss?"
She regards him fully, finally, with wide eyes that shine, and he is temporarily knocked off his feet, and permanently enshrined in her bright eyes like a bug in amber. He recognizes without quite realizing he has ended up part of something bigger than himself. All of humanity, even.
"I could use some company," she says. "Jemma Simmons."
"Leo Fitz," he responds, sitting down with his coffee and giving her a smile. She smiles back, and the pointed gleam to her teeth goes unnoticed.
