Hey! I saw the post mentioning snake enrichment. I want to have snakes someday and though I have done some research already, I haven't really heard much about enrichment, and I really want to do the best for my animals, so I would like to learn more about this! Are there any informational posts on snake enrichment? Thank you :)
Hi! :) Sorry it took me a couple hours to get to this - I was on mobile at work & couldn’t properly search for the links I wanted to include, so I waited until I was home.
I’m really excited about this question!! My favorite write-up on snake/reptile enrichment is from rainbowsnakes, who is fantastic & I really recommend following her if you don’t already. Here’s a link - http://rainbowsnakes.tumblr.com/post/119229812584/environmental-enrichment-for-reptiles-what-why This is another good post that explains a bit more how to properly provide enrichment for snakes & reptiles without causing stress - http://rainbowsnakes.tumblr.com/post/129147894234/ok
I would also highly suggest checking out her “snake enrichment” tag on her blog, which has tons of different ideas on things you can do. I have a “snake enrichment” tag as well if you want to search through that. (Apologies for my theme being kind of hard to read btw - I need to figure something different out soon.)
A couple big things you can do - provide UVB lighting ( http://skies-of-salt.tumblr.com/post/133594320533/herp-lighting-needs-to-change ), provide options for different temperatures & humidity along the gradient of what the species requires so they can have lots of options for where they want to be, and provide climbing and/or digging opportunities (depending on the species - and yes, terrestrial snakes like ball pythons will still climb appropriate structures). All of these are great for providing an environment where they can display natural behaviors & control their surroundings to a certain extent.
Then there are more ideas for enrichment like novel scent enrichment, providing opportunities to “hunt” frozen/thawed prey (creating scent trails by dragging prey around enclosure, adding scent via bedding before feeding to encourage natural behaviors prior to eating, etc.), adding novel textures or hides, and providing a varied diet.
I hope that helps! :D
My new desk lamp has old man winter feigning handsome in the studio. Levi tail rattles if he's disturbed while digging ( whenever his head is buried and he can't see what else is going on). Its very loud!
What sweethearts, they’re so intimidating <3 Azura went zooming down the length of her tub, right against the side, and the sound was just ridiculous.

Holy shit hope u are OK!!!??
Yeah, I’m okay, it’s mostly that just like everything is a mess now and my shirt is pretty well ruined.
I'm still looking for a Russian and when I get the chance I'll get one but I got a bredli :)

Nice, Whats your current shortlist :) ?
It’s longer than it probably should be lol but aside from the russian rat and dumerils, I’m also considering other rat snakes (specifically a white-sided black rat after I fell in love with one yesterday), an indigo snake, black tail cribo, cave racer (can you tell your snakes have had an influence? lol), or bredli python. Though I think the bredli might be a bit too heavy-bodied for this enclosure, like the dumerils, unless I can increase the depth. Possibly true for the drymarchon as well.
I haven’t looked very deep into care sheets for most of them yet, or legal restrictions concerning the indigos in my state, so that information will be a huge factor. But these have all been on my much longer list of reptiles I want eventually, and they’re the ones I think would most benefit from an enclosure with as much height.
rainbowsnakes answered your question “Curious: How much do dumerils boas like to climb?”
I have an MGB, I couldnt find any info on how much they climb so I went to youtube and looked for footage of them in the wild. Found quite a few videos of them climbing really well! They also looked a lot leaner than the ones I'd seen in captivity.

I don't own one, but they do spend a lot of time in the trees and are semiarboreal.
Thank you! I will have to check out some of those videos, I didn’t think to look in that direction...
I may be getting a potential enclosure from a friend that would be best suited for a semiarboreal snake. I’m trying to come up with some animals that will do well in the enclosure and that I am also prepared to care for. I’ve wanted a dumeril’s for awhile, so I’m glad that the setup wouldn’t cross that off the list. Though it’s going to make it harder for me to decide on a snake :P
I appreciate the input!
