Hi, do you mind if I ask you an equine diet question? I recently bought an arab mare who has begun to lose weight. She is on grassy pasture 24/7. I believe it's difficult for her to eat forage and am getting her teeth power floated asap, but I want to supplement her with beet pulp in the meantime. Can beet pulp be fed once a day because of the increased fiber, or should it be fed multiple times like concentrate? Is there anything I should look out for? Thanks!
I have never personally supplemented with beet pulp, but from everything I’ve read up and heard bout it, it can be fed either way with no problem.
The main thing to look out for with beet pulp is that it can cause choke if it is not thoroughly soaked, so be very careful with that. Soak it for about ten minutes just to be safe.
Also, if her teeth are not the issue, I would consider ulcers possibly, if her age is not a factor. Ulcers can be treated by feeding a horse licorice root every day fifteen minutes before their morning feed for three months.
EDIT: Beet pulp should be soaked at the least thirty minutes, not ten, I was incorrect!
