GROUPIE: Uschi Obermaier (born Ursula Obermaier)

Uschi was born on September 24th, 1946 in Sendling, Germany, and grew up interested in photography and fashion. In her late teens she began an apprenticeship with a photo restoration company before the popular West German magazine Twen offered her a modeling contract. By the time Uschi was 20, she was already covering many international magazines with photoshoots done by the likes of Helmut Newton and Guido Mangold. During the prime of her modeling, Uschi was known for tan complexion, voluminous hair and posing nude often. From 1968-71, she experimented with acting in a handful of European movies like Detektive (1969), Rote sonne (1970) and Haytabo (1971). In her early 20s, she gained a different type of notoriety for living in hippie communes all over Germany. Around 1968, Uschi most famously lived in Berlin’s politically oriented Kommune 1 with boyfriend, writer-director Rainer Langhans. Uschi and Rainer became famous for their radical politics and hippie lifestyle, which got them sometimes compared to John Lennon & Yoko Ono. Uschi later revealed that she never really cared that much about politics and only got involved with local riots and protests because Rainer did. In 1969, the couple left Kommune 1 and moved to Highfisch-Kommune in Munich.

About this time, Uschi and Rainer also started getting familiar with the UK music scene and regularly socialized with musicians. In early 1970, Rainer became inspired to organize his own German Woodstock with acts like the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix. While Fleetwood Mac stopped in Munich while touring that March, Rainer and Uschi invited original lead guitarist Peter Green to a party. The two were hoping the guitar player had the Stones’ contact info, but instead a more sinister incident ended up occurring. It’s hard to tell what exactly happened, as everyone involved that night has a different version. But essentially while Peter was partying with Uschi & Rainer, he took too much LSD and it triggered a breakdown. Not long after that, Peter left Fleetwood Mac, Rainer’s music festival ideas were abandoned and Rainer & Uschi separated.

A year earlier in February 1969, Uschi had a brief affair with Jimi Hendrix during the Experience’s last official tour. In the still unreleased documentary Last Experience (2010), there is supposedly footage or Jimi and Uschi making out. Allegedly, Jimi was the one who ended the fling because Uschi’s hardcore drug usage was too much even for his rockstar standards. From 1969-70, Uschi sporadically hooked up with both Mick Jagger and Keith Richards whenever they visited Germany. She later tagged along on the Stones’ 1975 American tour and was primarily Keith’s groupie. Apparently Keith was the musician she was most serious with, but they couldn’t be in an actual relationship because he was living with girlfriend Anita Pallenberg and their two kids. In Uschi’s 2007 memoir High Times, she claimed that Keith taught her how to use foul language in English. There were also rumors of her hooking up with Syd Barrett and Ringo Starr in the late ‘60s.

In 1973, Uschi met and eventually married her husband, popular Hamburg club owner Dieter Bockhorn. They lived internationally throughout Asia, the States and Mexico during their marriage before Dieter tragically died in a motorcycle accident in 1983. Since the wild days of her youth, Uschi settled in Topanga Canyon, CA as a jewelry designer, and is even a US citizen. High Times was also adapted into a film, Eight Miles High in 2007.
