RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOU CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR WHAT I ALREADY KNOW WILL BE ANOTHER CLASSIC CHART TOPPER BY TAYLOR ALISON SWIFT
I just saw your post about the reposting gifs issue. I was wondering if there is a way for the ignorant rebloggers like myself to know when a gif set is original or reposted by someone else? I know the stealing art-thing is a big issue in this digital world, but I've never really paid much attention to it. I don't want to help the problem along, though, by reblogging stolen content.
That’s a great question, and I hope you don’t mind my posting this because I feel like other people may be wondering as well. Unfortunately, there’s not an exact science, but I can tell you some common things to keep an eye out for:
Distinctive styles. This is really how the person I was referencing in that post got caught. If you spend time in any fandom for long enough, you’ll notice that some creators simply have their own personal style. For instance, I can look at a gifset from @ohkinney and not even see the source and know she made it. Ordinarily I’d also say the same for @itsbriankinney, but this time I clearly got duped since it was from someone I trusted, sigh. But that’s a really big one. If you see a post where the gifs look a lot like the style of a creator you’re familiar with, but someone else’s name attached, that’s a pretty major red flag.
Gorgeous edits from empty blogs. I say this one with a few reservations because obviously everybody is new on Tumblr at some point and has to start somewhere, and some people may just be naturally gifted at Photoshop or have been making edits elsewhere. But I’ve definitely caught some reposts from people who were posting absolutely stunning edits, but then I’d go to their blog and there would be nearly nothing else on it.
Inconsistent posts in blogs. This goes hand in hand with the above point. Sometimes I may just have a ~*feeling*~ a post isn’t right so I’ll go check out their blog. A big tell is if there’s a ton of original content, but it’s all in vastly different styles. (Spoiler alert: it’s because they don’t have any style of their own and are just stealing from lots of different people who’ve developed their own aesthetic.)
Weird sizing within a set. If you see a gifset and it looks like the individual gifs are all different sizes, that can be a sign that the person stole one or more gifs for their post and didn’t bother to resize them.
Generic tags. Some people who repost gifsets will use really generic tags. The standard tag protocol for most fandoms is [showname]edit, so, for instance, #qafedit, but a lot of these people don’t realize that and may just use the standard show and character names. But even more telling than that is when they use an overabundance of tags of really generic terms, like “gay,” “boys kissing,” “love is love,” etc., all of which I’ve seen in QAF reposts.
Obvious quality/stylistic differences within a set. From the fab @harryjamcs: “coloring and quality differences within a set are one of my red flags. Like some gifs look hd and others are super grainy. and some are like pastel while others are neon without it being an obvious stylistic choice”
Again, these are more guidelines than hard and fast rules. People can very well fall into any one of these buckets and absolutely have created their own content. But they’re just some things i’ve learned to keep an eye out for and that I look into if I suspect a post may feature stolen work.
I’m sure there are plenty more ways to spot the imposters that I’m not thinking of; in fact, I was only able to recall all of these thanks to @crossroadscastiel (thank you, friend!). If anybody out there has any other tips or tricks on how to spot the reposts, please feel free to add on!

I’m so excited for you!! Congratulations!! I did the same in February and am renovating right now! The good kind of scary.
Ahhhhh thank you so much!! Good luck renovating!! I’m super lucky, the house was just flipped and (pending inspection ofc) shouldn’t need any major changes until I have the time/money for it. Which is nice for my wallet, but I’m sure it’s fun (if not a lil overwhelming) to do those renovations. AHHHH!!!!
