“I would like to send out my condolences to the entire family of Mr. Ralph Wilson,” Spiller said. “He will forever be remembered and loved by myself and the rest of the Bills fans across the world. I personally want to thank Mr. Wilson for drafting me and showing me what a great organization he has built. As I sit here and think back, I remember first meeting him shortly before my press conference the day after the draft. He looked me in the eye and said, ‘I know that you will put some points up for us.’ I will not let you down, Mr. Wilson. May God be with you and your family always. This world has lost a great leader, but his legacy will surely live on forever." (Photo credit ProFootballTalk.com)
It's been a while...
It's been a while since I last posted, a la the Tumblr, but not as long as its been since the Bills last made the playoffs. As I sit here on my porch, on a surprisingly beautiful Buffalo November night, I keep pondering what is that has doomed this franchise of a super bowl title and for that matter even, in recent years, 11, soon to be 12 years to be exact, a satisfying wild card birth. The answer can be found with the one part of the puzzle that has never changed, Ralph Wilson. It has to be Ralph?? Right?? Mind you, I respect the man for the whole AFL, NFL thing and the fact that he has maintained a sports franchise in Buffalo for all these years, futhmore also located in a horrible place for a football stadium, no offense to the beautiful town of Orchard Park. In all reality though the man has only been owner to a team that has only gone to the playoffs 13 times since joining the National Football League in 1970. That is, the Buffalo Bills, in 42 years, have made the playoffs only 30% of those years, with the other 70% being, obviously, some pretty bad years. I cannot speak for the early years at War Memorial or the first days at the "Ralph", but atleast for the the last 20 years, give or take a year, have been very depressing personally as a Bills fan. Then I started thinking about, how good have the Bills really ever been? The answer, is simply, NOT GOOD. Since the AFL, NFL merger of 1970, the Bills have played a total of 622 games, winning only 48.1% of the time, with an overall record of 299 wins and 323 loses. The 70's were the Bills worst years, as they went 51-91, for a dismal 35% winning percentage. The 80's consisted of 2 winning seasons and one 8-8 year, but overall they went 61-91, for a 43.1% winning percentage. The 90's were the best years, winning 70.6% of their games, with an overall record of 113-47. The 90's though, will be remembered for the only team in NFL history to make it to the Super Bowl 4 consecutive years and LOSE! The new millennium brought another sub par performance from the Bills, only winning 41.3% of the time with an overall record of 66-94. Also as mentioned earlier, this is the decade that started our 11 year playoff drought. The Bills franchise has also seen its fair share of coaches. 16 coaches have ran the ship from the sidelines of the "Rock Pile" and the "Ralph. Of those 16, 5 different coaches have appeared since 2000. That is, of the 16 coaches 31.3% of them have been seen in the decade from 2000-2010, while the remaining percentage has been seen over the franchises other 30 years of existence. Mark Levy, the winnings coach in Bills history, has won 112 games compared to only 70 loses. He made alone, 37.5% of the Bills total wins, and only accounted for 21.7% of their loses. Many a debates our out as to whether Marv was a product of a good team, or the Bills were a product of a good coach. Regardless, he is the only coach in Bills history in the Hall of Fame, as stated earlier, the franchises winningest coach. So as this years season comes to the end, and the Bills are everything but mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, nearing their 12th year in a row without a playoff birth, I realize that as a relatively young Bills fan, my disappointment is shared throughout all of the franchises existence. When will the Bills win? The answer lies within the Ralph Wilson owning the team. As a team that continually spends under the cap, and fills its roster with released, undrafted, and practice squad players, under Ralph Wilson, it appears that the hope of winning will only come under new ownership. As in most successful business, the success starts at the top. If unsuccessful habits are happening within upper management, then unsuccessful outcomes will be seen throughout the whole organization. Go Bills!!
