It’s really sad to see people post up their sins on facebook and twitter, especially during the blessed month of Ramadan. A time when many Muslims are trying to leave certain sins themselves, and also encourage others to leave them also. A common response you’ll hear from these people is, “Listen, if you’re going to sin then what’s the point in hiding it, are you a hypocrite?” These words make me cringe. The Prophet ﷺ said, “All of my Ummah may be forgiven for their sins, except for those who publicize them.” [Bukhari] So not only is this person committing a sin, they are closing the door for Allah’s forgiveness. Apart from that, what this person doesn’t realize is that hiding one’s sin means that they feel guilty about it, that they are ashamed of it, that they have a certain level of haya (modesty), and it is these factors that can be a catalyst in them returning to Allah. May Allah rectify all of our affairs, and bring us closer to Him in this blessed month of Ramadan, ameen.
