Nienor was always in want of company on cold nights like this one. Even smothered under piles blankets, you could still hear the unrelenting whipping of the wind outside, sending eerie moans echoing through the castle halls like ghosts. She often found her self in the kitchens when she couldn’t sleep- the soft hum of the ovens, their warm glow always helped lull her to sleep.
This winter was longer than anyone had anticipated, and consequently, the lady had had even more trouble sleeping then normal, which also meant she’d been in the kitchens more often. The cooks were always kind and they even started keeping a set of pillows for her to sit on near the windows just so she wouldn’t have to sit on the floor. They also didn’t tell her parents what she was up to, which she was eternally grateful for.
One of the cooks, a young man named Hithon, was usually up when she was, and they had become friends in the ensuing months. They were an odd pair, sometimes just sitting in silence together, or she would doze in her little corner while he cooked. She always invited him to join her, and as dutiful as ever, he always declined....but not tonight.
The blonde smiled as she finished wrapping the blanket around the both of them, getting comfortable against the pillows. She’d never noticed until now but...he smelled like sugar...and his eyes...he had the darkest, yet the softest eyes she’d ever seen.
“This is much better...” She tried not to press too close to him as to be indecent, but the urge was hard to resist. “Warmer- I mean...” A little shiver ran up her spine then, and in response, she pulled the quilt they were wrapped in higher until it covered both their faces. In the dim light, there was no way to judge how close she was to him, and the next thing she new, she had turned and her lips were touching his. It was a surprise, but she didn’t pull away, instead she pressed a little closer, drinking him in just in case this was only chance she got.
