vague rambles about the mighty ninth au
Doing a deep dive into the necromancers of the party and how they work together!
Healing is difficult for necromancers. It’s counterintuitive, time - consuming and often very painful given the tremendous amount of effort needed to take the delicate mechanisms of death in hand and force them to work backward. Jester and Caduceus have found ways to make do. They work in tandem, their specializations playing off each other - Jester stabilizing and preserving the body, Caduceus calling forth and tethering the soul. Their combined efforts are a massive thanergy drain, but with the heavy hitters of the Nein at their back they usually end up okay.
(Jester is occasionally one of these heavy hitters. It takes a lot of work, and she can only do it when she really concentrates, but she can direct some of her magic inward and temporarily restore her strength to the point that she can wield a weapon. Every now and then a girl wants to be a badass with a greataxe, and if the powers that be won’t let that happen Jester’s going to do it herself.)
Fjord is an occultist by trade, a student of the weird, wonderful world - beyond - the - world that is the River. His necromantic skills, while incredibly useful in other situations, don’t work especially well in close combat. He learned to defend himself with a falchion while he was working with Vandran’s merchant shuttle crew, and he’s a quick study, picking up techniques from the rest of the Nein as they continue to fight together. Beau is his primary teacher, trading etiquette lessons for sparring practice, and every time he throws a punch that lands she’s proud.
Caleb was one of the most ambitious students the Library had ever produced, and he devoted his youth to learning everything about necromancy he possibly could. He has a bit of everything at his disposal - blood, lymph, flesh, a siphoning theorem or two that he is incredibly loath to use - but at his core he’s an interrogator, not a soldier. A scalpel rather than a sword. His skill lies in control and focus - forcing his opponent’s muscles to twitch and jerk ever so slightly, knocking them off balance, or slowing their heartbeat tick by tick until they’re barely conscious. Small, subtle, barely perceptible things that you don’t notice until it’s too late.
Molly was the messiest, most bombastic kind of blood mage, making a show of every fight. He and Yasha were a vision together, a perfect balance of steady strength and flashy skill, and she still feels a hollow ache whenever she draws her blades without him beside her.
I was going thru your Deacon tag and I saw your head cannon meme post. I was wondering if you would be comfortable expanding on what your head cannon is for Barbara and how you head cannon Deacon playing a stronger role in her death? I also think he had a bigger role in it than he let’s on.
Time to clear out my brain dust bunnies and try to put a vague headcanon collection into words lol. I believe Deacon is telling the truth regarding the basics of his past - he was in a gang of bigots, he met Barbara and married her, Barbara ended up dead thanks to bigots. His dialogue is still a little vague and almost cagey - somehow the Deathclaws find out Barbara’s a synth and catch up to her, and I think that’s where the rub is. (Although you could also say it’s just Bethesda not having the time/care to go into detail on Deacon’s backstory - him not having a personal quest really sucks :( )
Deacon’s paranoid and refuses vulnerability, and personally I think that it’s because a slip up of his own led to Barbara’s death. He might have trusted the wrong person, freaked out when he found out Barbara was a synth and vented to people he shouldn’t have. Deacon could be to blame for her (and by extension everyone else) discovering she’s a synth - maybe back in his gang days he collected enough information to point to her, maybe he was noticing strange things about Barbara and stuck his nose where he shouldn’t have.
Whatever the reason, I think if it wasn’t for Deacon Barbara would still be kicking, beyond the Deathclaws just being the ones to kill her. He started the dominoes falling and knows it. Whether it was due to expressing his own negative emotions, trusting someone he shouldn’t have, or just not covering his tracks well enough, I think whatever it was is something he’s desperately over-correcting for by the time Sole comes along.
I remember seeing people talking about the possibility of Deacon being the one who killed her (accidentally, mercy-killing, and out of rage) and I can’t have the heart to agree. We already have one mercy-killing guy in Boone when it comes to Fallout, accidentally is cruel to Barbara (she already deserves better >>) and while Deacon might be a bastard his heart’s genuinely in a good place so I can’t believe he’d purposefully kill the woman he loves.
Dunno if this is the type of info you were looking for anon but it’s what I can pull from my dust bunny brain haha.
Headcanon: Beauty Routines
Some people are under the odd assumption that beauty shouldn’t require too much effort. While that’s somewhat true, it still requires some effort. These can be as simple as daily washing routines or taking regular rests, or even adjusting one’s diet to foods that have been known to be beneficial for skin, hair, nails, and so on.
While Sona could be considered naturally conventionally beautiful by some standards, she’s also a fully grown adult. That means her skin has lost some of its childhood resilience, and it will likely (as far as she understands) continue down that road as she grows older. So moisturizing and soaking in baths with oils and herbs depending on the season and weather is an important part of her routines to keep her skin soft - and soft skin is less prone to cracking and turning flaky, of course, which would age her faster.
Once a week she’ll use a special mixture of clay and ground minerals on her face. As the clay dries it helps remove dead skin and impurities. Afterwards, depending on the season, she’ll usually use either a milk lotion or something made from kelp (sea-based products are popular where the kingdom meets the ocean, and all sorts of medicines, foods, and materials wind up in the heart of the city’s markets).
Exfoliation is another thing she takes care of weekly. While Sona washes up twice daily, it’s usually just wiping her underarms, privates, face, and feet (and wherever else may need it). Scrubbing off dry/dead skin is a more time consuming task, mainly taken care of by gently scrubbing with a boar hair brush. She’ll brush her dry skin first, then wash herself off and wipe herself down again.
Pumice stones are also a popular item for tougher areas, such as the feet. They’re considered somewhat valuable since they can only be mined near volcanic areas - which are popular hiding places for dragons and other beasties. And Targonian lands are often just as dangerous.
Sona is also very particular about caring for her nails since she uses them to pluck the Etwahl’s strings. She trims and files them and applies a strong polish. She prefers a matte finish, but on occasion she’ll leave them glossy. The slight texture of a matte finish helps her feel the strings better (and her nails tend to get scuffed up anyway). She does prefer the smooth feel of gloss, though.
How about Tango?
*points at Create!Tango* That motherfucker is an orphan with trauma and I love him.
Okay but Tango is a Netherborne that grew up in the Nether. The world was not kind to him growing up, he's got trauma from different things, and he's very trans.
Ace gay. All of ZITS is ace and/or aro in some way, fight me.
Him and Impulse actually had their top surgeries around the same time, it was before they met but like ya know. Also here they met while Impulse was still stuck in the Nether cus demon rules mean he was stuck there his whole life (which is why Tango summoned him).
Fucking gay for his boyfriends, he just loves his big eyes bfs so much you don't understand.
Leaving off with honorary mention of Tango's very strong Mumbo obsession because it is so silly and honestly mood (yes I know it is canon, but I'm thinking about it again).
*shakes u* ANTLERS? Plz tell all I M holding a microphone to ur face
Kdkdsi, the antlers are honestly just Gem pffff.
She's a reindeer dryad that's tired to nature so her antlers aren't standard for the animal she's based on. I haven't fully decided between two choices which are: A. She drops them during fall and winter then they regrow in spring and autumn, or B. Leaves and flowers grow along her antlers during spring but fall off during autumn. All I know is she's (of course) a birch dryad and she's tied specifically to that plant, which also means she burns easily (casual tree fact, lol).
Then the lovely horn havers that are Impulse and Doc, though only one has organic horns XD
Doc's aren't real horns, he often upgrades his cybernetics and this time around he has horns cus goat. Specifically they are alpine goat horns, so medium length with a slight but noticable curve. Not too intimidating but also not too friendly, just a good sweetspot. (Cus I'm a sucker for intimidating but still friendly looking characters)
Finally Impulse! I already said it to you but jacob sheep! He's got two sets, one the curls around his ears while another curves upwards. His are actually somewhat chipped from things like his life in the Nether and the Life Series, which just makes him look tougher than he mean to be. Just a big ol' demon, nothin much to worry about though vwv
This made my brain rotate, I just love putting animal features onto characters so much. Honestly my favorite is Gem though, she's literally a talking birch and no one can convince me otherwise >:3
Hermitcraft creature headcanons?? Biology headcanons???? Worldbuilding?? You have my full attention
It's a wide spectrum of Minecraft with a major focus on HC since hyperfixation, but pretty much XD
The simple question of "how does Tango wear clothes if he's naturally firey" got me and it spiralled into making agriculture in the Nether cus it doesn't canonically have any so fuck it Piglins and Netherborne now have a form of agriculture for food and also clothes.
Basically there are a few different types of fabrics you can make that are fire-proof to some extent, one of the softest is a type of basically cotton. It's not nearly as soft as normal cotton, but it is soft compared to everything else. This is what Tango mainly wears because soft, though he uses hoglin leather in his jacket cus it is cool >:3
I feel like Piglins would proba use the nether tree leaf type to make into fabric, but I don't know nearly enough about fungus ;o;. If they could, it probs be stinky as hell
I got so dang rambly but listen listen, if you get me talking about how plants and general agriculture can effect culture I will not shut up. It's my favorite thing besides animal biology and general worldbuilding
