PREMIERE: Ramengvrl’s “CA$HMERE” Is the Opulent & Gritty Track Designed for the Aux Cord
Putri Soeharto, more popularly known by the moniker Ramengvrl, is one of the few female rappers in Indonesia. Born and raised in Jakarta, Ramengvrl isn’t solely defined by being one of the select up-and-coming Indonesian women within the hip-hop realm, but rather her ability to overcome the constraints of her region through her addicting sound and international appeal. She broke out onto the scene in 2016 with her single “I’m Da Man” and has been killing the game ever since. Aside from being nominated for NET TV’s Indonesian Choice Awards 2018 for “Breakthrough Artist of the Year,” she has collaborated with such notable artists as Dipha Barus and Mardial. Her signature sense of style mirrors her sound–expensive, high class, and gritty. Her latest song “CA$HMERE” plays off that desire to have the finest things in life, and she delivers it with a polished street-wise attitude.
“CA$HMERE” begins with a fiery speech from Ramengvrl, detailing the riches she’ll be commemorated with upon death. It’s an addicting track, and it cooks. “When I die I’ll be covered in cashmere, when I die I’ll be covered in cash,” repeats throughout the single, carrying an infectious indifference that stays with the listener long after the song’s culmination.
The production accompanying her rapid-fire verses is drenched in sound effects. From cash registers opening, playful adlibs, to droning sirens, “CA$HMERE” is brimming with the same sense of opulence that Ramengvrl raps about. Choosing not to restrict herself to a singular genre, she oscillates between rap, hip-hop, and pop, carrying the same bad girl poise and gritty sound throughout.
Ramengvrl first fell in love with hip-hop when she stumbled upon Kanye West. Since that initial Kanye crush (an emotion many can relate to), she has found inspiration from artists like Tyler the Creator, M.I.A and Charli XCX. Influenced by a myriad of different cultures, she chose her name from her love of Japan, sharing,
“I really love Japanese culture and have been exposed to it since I was a kid. So, I think that Ramengvrl will be a perfect pseudonym.”
Though American audiences may be out of luck for the time being in terms of live shows, Ramengvrl is set to play WE THE FEST 2018 in Jakarta Indonesia this July. Until she makes it overseas, be the person daring and edgy enough to blast “CA$HMERE” the next time you’re passed the aux.
