Instant Classic: Ramirez- Taylor 05.22.21

A great performance from Josh Taylor and Jose Ramirez in Las Vegas this past weekend. Josh Taylor became the first Scotsman since Ken Buchanan to hold an undisputed championship after beating Ramirez in an exciting fight.

Neither fighter threw any curveballs with their looks, Taylor wearing a near identical set to his previous fight and Ramirez wearing nearly the same template save for the addition of some green text along the side. Both opted for white gloves, Taylor’s by Everlast and Ramirez’s by Cleto Reyes similar to those he wore against Maurice Hooker.

Taylor wore white and gold Nike shoes w white and gold socks, Ramirez wore (what I believe are) Nike shoes and socks in black and red:

Really liked both looks - obviously Taylor’s tartan trunks are classic, but Ramirez had strong gear as well, and the looks complimented each other nicely.

Josh "The Tartan Tornado" Taylor outlasted Jose Ramirez in an instant classic, notching a unanimous decision (114-112 3x) to capture the junior welterweight title. With the win, Taylor becomes the sixth male undisputed champion of the four-belt era, and the first from Scotland to do so. Ramirez, who had been world champion since March 2018, invested in the body in the early going, but Taylor (18-0, 13 KOs) was equal to the task in the trenches. The tide turned in the sixth round when Taylor nailed Ramirez with a straight left hand as Ramirez lunged forward. In the seventh, an uppercut planted Ramirez to the canvas. Sims Shocks Elvis Kenneth "Bossman" Sims Jr. was once one of America's top amateur talents, but a pair of professional losses stunted his momentum. Well, Sims (16-2-1, 5 KOs) is a contender now, as he shocked top prospect Elvis Rodriguez (11-1-1, 10 KOs) via an eight-round majority decision by scores of 76-76 and 78-74 2x. Sims dominated the second half of the fight, winning the last four rounds on two of the judges' cards to clinch the win. Featherweight: Jose Enrique Vivas (21-1, 11 KOs) UD 8 Louie Coria (12-5, 7KOs). Scores: 75-74 3x. What's an evening of boxing without a little controversy? Coria knocked down Vivas twice in the third round, and Vivas had a point deducted for low blows in the fourth. Vivas rallied in the second half of the fight, winning the last four rounds, according to two of the judges. The hard-luck Coria has now lost his last three bouts, all via controversial decision. Just a few days away from a massive 140lb unification fight in Las Vegas between Josh Taylor and Jose Ramirez. Jose Ramirez was covered on Monday. We’ll do a modified review for Josh, since we’ve done some of his previous fights.

Jose Ramirez - Last Five

Ahead of his massive unification fight with Josh Taylor on Saturday night in Las Vegas, lets take a look at Jose Ramirez’s last five looks. We’ll do Josh Taylor later this week.

In March of 2018, Jose Ramirez beat Amir Imam by unanimous decision in New York City w a red & white look, w Cleto Reyes gloves:

In September of 2018 he wore the same template and colors (with a notable waistband difference) in his win over Antonio Orozco in Fresno, taking the 140 lb WBC title in the process:

In February 2019 he wore the same template but with a complete color change -- going with black, purple and gray - for his win over Jose Zepeda (again in Fresno):

In July of 2019, Ramirez stopped Maurice Hooker in their outstanding and exciting unification fight. He returned to a red and white look but switched up to some pretty cool white, red and green Cleto Reyes gloves:

Same look and template (although back to the red Cleto Reyes) for his most recent fight against Viktor Postol in Las Vegas, a decision win in August 2020.
