TODAY IN HISTORY: On December 13, 1896, Governor-General Ramon Blanco was replaced by Camilo Polavieja.
During his term, Blanco was unpopular among conservatives in the Philippines because of his largely liberal policies.
Upon the death of Jose Rizal, Blanco presented his sash and sword to the family of the martyr as an apology for not being able to stay the execution.
Ramon Blanco was later appointed as Captain-General of Cuba, where he resided until 1898.
