Rockstar AU Ramón (Ray) Cepeda, founding member, drummer, and vocalist of the up-and-coming band "Wolves of the Barrio," spent some time in Atlanta last week, reportedly collaborating with an as yet unknown local artist. "All I can say is, I'm really going back to my roots with this track, and I'm so glad I have the opportunity to work with this kind of talent." Starting out in a few different bands in his own hometown, Ray knows the plight of the underground singer/singwriter better than his //Wolves// reputation lets on at first sight. "I made my way up from the very bottom," he says, referring to the lower class, mostly immigrant neighborhood where he grew up. Ray will soon set off on a press tour around the United States to promote his campaign to bring music to impoverished areas with a high immigrant population. A Fool in Paradise// HenRay!

Finally. A safe place. Walls and regular houses and running water and everything. Ray can hardly believe it. Once the group gets settled into the house, Ray decides to go for a walk and see what this town looks like. After a moment's hesitation, he decides to bring his knife along. It might be habit, or it might be fear, but Ray doesn't think it matters. He pauses on the porch and takes a deep breath. Somehow the air even smells cleaner, almost like it used to. Before. He starts down the street, somewhat relaxed but still alert to any surprises. After a few minutes, many houses, and a notable lack of undead neighbors, he spots what looks like a small kind of park-- well, a bench and some trees, at least. He heads toward it, eager to sit down and rest with eyes closed for once. He is about to sit when he sees a familiar figure leaning against a tree. His face darkens, and he only decides to speak when Henry shifts his weight to his other leg. He says in a husky whisper, "I'm a fool for thinking I was special to you."

Ray is happy. He's finally happy again. It's been a few months since the divorce, and the kids have spent the last week with him at his new place in LA. Joanna complained at first, but once they went to the beach, she was as excited as her little brother. Damien was ecstatic from the start; he always took after Ray, and his love of water was no different.

It's been the perfect, stereotypical Day at the Beach, and Ray is exhausted but still good for a few more hours before they head home. He laughs as Jo races her brother out as far as they can swim, and starts after them. You can never be too careful, even on a perfect day.

"Come on, Dad, can we go all the way to pier?" Damien shouts, and Ray debates for a moment before nodding. They've both shown a whole lot of improvement since last summer at the neighborhood pool, and the pier isn't too far away.

"Okay, guys, but don't get too far ahead of me!" He wades out until he's up to his chest, then dives under the waves to get closer as they head out farther off shore. He surfaces and keeps his eyes on them while he swims, hearing their laughter and smiling in spite of the salty water that laps at his teeth.

They're almost to shore and Ray is a few dozen feet out when Joanna screams. She's pointing at something, Damien is jumping up and down in the thigh-high surf, and Ray immediately triples his speed. "What's wrong, what happened?" he shouts, and both kids yell back together, "MERMAID!"

Ray reaches them, out of breath, heart pounding, and stares. "You scared the life out of me with that scream!"

"Sorry, Dad, but look! Over there! Do you see her?" She grabs Ray's wrist and points toward a gathering of rocks.

"It was a mermaid! A real live mermaid!" Damien shouts.

"Hey! Calm down," Ray chides. "There's no such thing as mermaids." But still he follows his oldest's finger and scans the water. "I don't see anything. You two are crazy!" he jokes.

Joanna rolls her eyes and darts away from Ray, swimming in the direction of the supposed sighting.

"Hey! Come back here, right now!" Ray shouts, but then Damien is chasing right after her, and Ray scrubs his hands over his face in frustration. He starts after them both, muttering under his breath.

Ray wipes his hands on his pants after sending the kinds to go change. The snow that was on his gloves melted quickly into water, and he hates cold fingers.

He strips off his coat as he heads to the kitchen, forgoing his normal “Hang up your coat” rule as he slides it onto the shoulders of a kitchen chair.

He is just starting to heat some milk for hot chocolate when Daryl appears in the doorway to the kitchen. He laughs out loud at the way his sweatpants are almost falling from Daryl’s tiny hips. “I think you went in the wrong room,” he teases as he makes his way to his son and swoops him up. “Gotta wait a few years until that can fit you!”

Ray tilts his head back along with the bottle, and the last few drops of dark liquid fall onto his tongue. He swallows, then looks at the empty bottle. He barely resists the urge to throw it against the wall, and instead shouts into the empty living room. "Fuck!" He stands up, grabs his keys, and slams the door behind him. The neighbor's dog charges the fence, barking, He barely slows down while cursing the dog. "Jódete!" he says, pointing a finger angrily. He continues down to the corner liquor store, one thing on his mind: he needs to get fucked up. It's been a shitty week-no, a shitty few months. He strolls in and nods to the owner, then grabs a bottle of whisky. He raises a hand to the man, a frequent customer of his own, and walks out. He looks around, and thinks, /Fuck it,/ and cracks open the bottle. The long swing makes his eyes water, and he sits down on the curb with his elbows on his knees. He pulls out his last cigarette, crushed from a week in his pocket, and it fumbles to the ground. "FUCK!" It comes out much louder than intended, and he takes another long drink before resting his forehead in one hand.
