Rändajad - Urban Symphony
Estonia were the surprise 2001 winners of the Eurovision Song Contest and in reflection, they deserved it. They have provided a list of interesting songs some have done well and others have sunk like a stone. Estonia have tried to corner the niche market of ‘favourable’ entries to Eurovision and in most parts they work as seen in 2015 and 2018. In others, it didn’t (see 2016 and 2017).
Eurovision 2009 was the one in Moscow. Russia had invaded Northern Georgia in late 2008 and Georgia withdrew from the contest. Estonia initially stated that they would withdraw from the Eurovision 2009 in support of their Georgian brothers. But that got revoked. So, Rändajad almost didn’t happen which would have been a shame. It is an exquisitely dramatic piece of music that I love. I love Sandra’s velvety voice and the fiddle part in the middle.
