thinking about the end of dragonfly in amber and how in book canon the stones seem to affect travelers who watch someone passing through...
when gellis goes through the stones, roger seems to experience the same confusion and pain that claire did when she actually traveled herself:
The fire, the body, the night itself, disappeared abruptly in a shriek of blinding noise. Roger found himself facedown in the grass, clutching at the earth in frantic search of a familiar sensation to which to anchor his sanity.
claire seems to experience the same, as she actually passes out, and both she and roger are shown to have experienced a strong pull toward the portal:
Blinded by whiteness, deafened by the scream of rending stone, he groped, flailing wildly, out of touch with his own extremities, conscious only of an immense pull and the need to resist it. ... “Oh, God,” she said. “Oh, God. I didn’t think I could stop you. You were crawling straight to it. Oh, God.”
why does brianna not feel the same pull when she can travel, too? no fucking idea. ANYWAY i'm obsessed with the idea of the stones as a sort of black hole or even a temporary possession, of the process of time travel itself being more gradual and far more agonizing.
can non-travelers experience any of it? maybe just a general feeling of wrongness, or a stark change in air pressure, like a plane losing or gaining altitude. if we're talking show canon, we do already know that there can be some echoes of the past/future that surface around the stones from the scene where claire is calling for frank at craigh na dun in the 1700s while he's calling for her in the 1900s, and they can faintly hear each other.
anyway, i think the show definitely shies away from making time travel truly horrific, and it probably wasn't diana's intention either BUT this is my canon now so 😌
[ BLANKET ]: sender drapes a blanket over receiver's shoulders. Tom @ Frank
⠀ already, frank has begun to acclimate to having tom in his home.
⠀ his home—the frame of reference is quite deliberate. claire may live here in name, her clothing hung neatly in the wardrobe and her perfume laid out on the vanity, but the woman that frank loved no longer resides in any corner of any of their rooms. sometimes, he believes he glimpses her, the way one's peripheral attention might capture a glimmer of movement in the dark. a flicker of familiarity, and the ill-advised swell of hope. frank is not yet strong enough to resist pursuing it, though his efforts have thus far always ended in naught.
⠀ the sound of footsteps begins to rouse him from his thoughts, drawing him up from the depths of his contemplation like the steady raising of a bucket from a well. as he breaks the surface, he twists to glance behind him and sees tom approaching with an afghan, his tall, strong form leaning forward over the low back of the leather sofa so he can wrap it about frank's shoulders. frank hums appreciatively—a low, throaty noise—and his muscles relax beneath the weight and sudden warmth; he'd not even realized he was cold.
⠀ that is the way of it, it seems, with them. he hadn't expected tom to become such a large part of his life; tom had been a distant colleague, and then a research partner, and then a simple release of bodily tension. he had swollen to fill each space that frank had carved out for him and then some, cracking open the constraints of their relationship and forcing himself into the gaps.
⠀ claire doesn't know about him. no one does.
⠀ frank lifts his brandy from the coffee table and sips at it as tom comes around the sofa. as he swallows, he gestures to the sideboard and its waiting decanter with his glass. "pour yourself a few fingers," he says, unsure whether tom will do so without his explicit permission. this is only the third time frank has invited him into his home, and their dynamic is different here than it is in his university office, or in the dark, cramped library stacks.
⠀ "i should light a fire," frank says, as tom settles himself on the sofa beside him. he unwinds one side of the blanket and shifts closer, wrapping both his arm and the afghan around tom's shoulder. with a contented smile, he noses into the space beside tom's ear and presses a gentle kiss to his jaw, which is clean-shaven and mouthwateringly fragrant. "but i find myself reluctant to move at the moment."

i need you all to know that frank's very first thought when he finds claire and jamie's obituary in his research (well... "obituary"... but how's he supposed to know that) is she's going to leave me.
⠀⠀⠀FRANK RANDALL.
⠀at a glance. married british historian in the mid-1900s dealing with the loss (and then "loss") of his wife, claire, who disappeared during their second honeymoon in scotland and resurfaced in the same town three years later, pregnant and claiming to have traveled through time. they move to america where he remains conflicted, bitter, and mourns their relationship, even as he begins discreetly seeing other women (as mutually agreed upon). he raises claire's daughter as his own, and she becomes the centerpiece of his life. selfish and authoritative but also intelligent, loving, and an attentive and supporting father. there is a seed of rage and violence in him that he successfully suppresses, at times through great effort.
randall is the kind of guy who almost exclusively listens to rap and metal. the white boy who religiously listens to eminem and swears he sounds "just like that" when he raps (he does not). he's listening to bvb and hollywood undead like it's 2009. he is a juggalo but lowkey
Original Character; Randall Godwyn. Theatre enthusiast and professor. Lowkey a massive control freak and gets off to "casting" roles for people and gets super upset if they don't comply. Also a stalker with a fetish for being unwanted and hated. He's gross.
