Urban Warrior Lookbook by POISA Photos by Barbara Minishi
I remember talking to Barbara Minishi about my collection even before I had done my sketches and I had these images swimming in my head of urban warriors, Maasai morans, Turkana men, gladiators and the fierce fashionistas. I shopped for fabric in the shops in Nairobi's Ngara and Westlands Areas...took an interesting detour to look for little findings and Afrocentric inspiration at the Triangle Curio Market in Westlands, my "Uncles" and "Aunties" were cheerfully calling me to sample their brightly coloured earrings and necklaces, their soapstone and wooden bowls, their aluminum and brass amulets. The interesting market sounds of little transistor radios tuned to different radio stations, the chattering ladies and the clicking curios softly I the morning breeze had me fired up to sketch for my launch, Swahili Fashion Week and Nigeria Fashion Week.
As I started to put my designs on to paper I had close to two months left before my reveal show....I knew I wanted to forge ahead with a new fresh approach to make my brand stand out...especially because I wanted to go from the East Coast of Africa to enter into the West Coast of Africa, the hub of African fashion.
Barbara was an absolute genius with the concept she wanted to use for the lookbook... A construction site in Nairobi City at night!!! She planned to use lighting to create her brand of magic! I had goose pimples all over my body when she spoke of her idea!!! Without hesitation, I told her to go ahead. She was an artist as I was and I absolutely wanted to go along with her plans. For Hair and Make Up we brought in Randolf, a good friend of mine for many years and a genius at styling hair from London to Paris to Milan...to (even) Nairobi!!! Muthoni Njoba a makeup artist with a deep love for body painting...a new found friend and artist. The four of us were perfectly suited to make magic together as seen below!!!
Click the link for Poisa's facebook page to see the whole lookbook. Please remember to like our facebook page and drop us a line.
