Salim Ahmed Benali: 1950s Lookbook

An early 1950s lookbook for Salim Benali, the husband of 1950s heir Gloria Morales, in his mid-20s. Salim Ahmed Benali was born in Los Angeles to Algerian and Moroccan parents. His father Mustapha is the co-owner of a foreign imports business in LA and hopes that Salim will follow in his footsteps. While currently employed in an assistant position, Salim's dream is to be a novelist, though it's hard for him to stay motivated beyond his own creative endeavors. Salim is the father of twins, Dean and Irene. His style is professional gentleman's attire but when at home he prefers something comfortable that he can relax in. His traits are bookworm, lazy, and creative.

Gloria Morales Benali: 1950s Lookbook

Starting off the 1950s is a lookbook for this decade's fashionable heiress, the newly-married Gloria Morales Benali. The daughter of war hero Héctor Morales and actress Alexandrea Cole, growing up in the postwar economy impacted her expensive tastes and tendency for the romantic fashions of the early 1950s. Recently married to her high school sweetheart Salim Benali, Gloria lives the American Dream as a housewife in sunny Los Angeles. Her traits are outgoing, materialistic, and self-assured.

With the finishing of Gloria's new home bar room, house parties became a regular occurrence at the Benali home. Sometimes Salim invited over one of his coworkers, but more frequently, Gloria caught up with her large circle of friends. She loved entertaining and playing the part of the hostess while her guests enjoyed tropical drinks, in the style of the themed bars that were popping up around Los Angeles. It was also a great excuse for her to show off her chic wardrobe.

It was at one such event, however, that Gloria's brother Salvador was approached by his friend and former lover, Anton Pavlenko. Things remained amicable between them though not without an air of tension.

"I talked to your wife, Sal," Anton admitted, driven by liquid courage, "and she knows about our past, and knows you still harbor feelings for me. Don't deny it."

"And? What are you suggesting?"

"What if you didn't have to choose?" Anton asked.

It sounded impossible, yet he knew how understanding Mary had been when he'd admitted his attraction to men. As he found himself drawn closer to Anton, a million questions ran through his head. "I'll talk to Mary."

The first week after she missed her cycle, Gloria didn't think much of it, but when more weeks passed, accompanied by bouts of nausea, it became clear. Her wish was coming true, and she and Salim would be parents!

Gloria's Diary

Salim got a promotion and is now the assistant to the manager! With his increased paycheck, there's more to spend on beautifying our home— and I had the most novel idea!

Since Dean and Irene share a bedroom, there's a spare room in our house. I read an article in Better Lots and Gardens magazine recently about how to make a home bar for entertaining, and quickly got to work on decorating. I went with a tropical theme, and I think Salim liked the result too. We're already planning to host a cocktail party soon!

Gloria awoke in the middle of the night with a sharp pain— she had gone into labor. Within minutes, Salim was up and ready to take her to the hospital. She had already decided on the names for either sex of the baby. Either way, they'd be prepared, or so she thought.

She safely delivered her first child, followed quickly by another. Twins– a boy and a girl. The names suited two twins perfectly: Dean Omar Benali and Irene Sara Benali. The next day, she brought her two bundles of joy back home to their nursery.

To help Gloria get ready for the birth of her child, Alexandrea threw her a baby shower. Several of her friends from high school attended, as well as Mary, Sal, and their children Estela and Tommy.

Taking care of a puppy and decorating the nursery on top of cooking and cleaning was hard work, but after serving as a nurse in Korea, Gloria was accustomed to multitasking. She eagerly anticipated the arrival of her baby.

As an engagement present, Alexandrea helped Gloria and Salim secure a down payment on a charming one-story house near Salvador's. They had not yet moved in but often visited Salim's parents at their apartment, where Dalila Benali treated them to a home-cooked meal laden with spices, vegetables, and couscous.

Mustapha Benali, the ambitious co-owner of a foreign imports business, hoped that Salim would one day follow in his footsteps. He frequently gave him advice on starting work now that he had a fiancée and to pay back the loan for the house. To Salim, this came across as nagging, though he agreed to start at an entry-level position for an advertising company, with his father's approval and Gloria's support.
