A Song in the Dark Randomness

Have some miscellaneous nonsense for A Song in the Dark.

I apologize for the fact that this is what I'm going to be talking about for the foreseeable future, but I have to keep myself hyped so I can write the dang thing.

Map, a little lore dump, and the playlist under the cut.

First, a super rough map. Not to scale, and I think the southern half is too narrow, but it's roughly what I'm working with. Mostly scrubbed of spoilers, but there are some assumptions that can be made, I reckon.

The territory of the high elves is more than just the forest stronghold of Seijoh - they occupy half of the northwestern tip of the continent. The Divide is a physical separation, and is why Seijoh isn't super bothered with most of the goings on down south. It also means they're kinda trapped up there with Whitefall - the humans are greedy things, which is why its on sight with The Order.

Fukurodani is home to the shifter race of owlkin. It was once a much larger kingdom, occupying most everything south of Nekoma. Guess who pressed them into a corner. Guess who it's on sight with for them, too.

The dragons of Nekoma live above it all, literally. There are villages and towns around the foothills of The Aviary where the dragonkin live, but the big 100% all-natural dragons all live up the mountain. The dragonkin serve as their emissaries when communication with others is necessary. It's been a good, long while since anyone has met directly with a dragon - they are custodians of balance and try to stay hands off. Their eyes, however, have been on Whitefall this past century.

Orcs and demons occupy that southernmost tip, taken in as refugees by Fukurodani. Demons have always been reclusive, but orcs were once a boisterous, nomadic people that spread up the western coast and into the interior. GUESS WHO pressed them. (Also, in this, neither orcs nor demons are evil. They have the same capacity for "evil" or "good" as anyone else.)

There are also halflings and wood elves who don't concern themselves with kingdoms. They prefer to live their lives in the deepest, most undisturbed forests in the southern half of the continent. You won't see too many of them in larger towns and cities, and they'd like to keep it that way, thank you very much.

But I'm missing lots of little towns / villages, roads, rivers, and an indication of where all these forests are. I'll figure it out.

And then a list of other worldbuilding type stuff I wrote up back when I started all this... again, not too spoilery, but assumptions... they can be made.

And finally, the playlist. It's on Tidal because I quit Spotify for good last month, so I'm not really sure how many folks can access it... but... here it is.

I have just. So much more stuff. Lore and background on the Order and the Paladins, how the different races work, the Godking and its true nature / relationship to Entropy, personal motivations and backstories for all the characters. I have written more ABOUT this thing than I have FOR it.

I'd love to share it, but most of that IS spoilery;;; So I'm just here yapping about mostly nothing with myself, haaa.

the got milk? thing is real??? i thought it was a just a joke wtf is the got milk? campaign

as a marketing major I'm so glad you asked because this is practically required reading

the got milk? campaign started in california and spread to the rest of the usa to promote the dairy industry and get americans drinking milk. the basic premise of most ads was putting the viewer in a situation where one would desperately need milk, and then coyly asking "got milk?" it was funny while also creating a sense of urgency in the viewer that they absolutely needed to go buy milk

schools, gyms, daycares, doctor's offices, etc usually had got milk? posters up to promote healthy dairy consumption. sometimes the campaign partnered with other products like cookies or cereal to combine their marketing power

celebrities were paid to endorse milk

and then of course there were commercials that aired on tv like the famous "Aaron Burr" superbowl ad

the humor was sometimes dark. One commercial was an old cat lady who goes to feed her horde of hungry cats some milk but there's none left in the carton so she tries powdered milk saying "they'll never know the difference" but then the cats go berserk and you're left wondering if they ate her.

basically a genius marketing firm created a trendy meme that spread like wildfire. i like to think of it as early milennial humor, but ofc gen x were the primary buying market

the campaign did eventually retire after a 20yr run. i remember seeing a celeb poster in my high school cafeteria in the mid-00s and thinking "that's so old. who even is mandy moore?"

new HC accrued: during the devil ending events Kou's wearing one of Goro's shirts under her "battle jacket" she borrowed one during (like) she cares and didn't have a chance to give it back

and I see perfectly how he's mocking her about "stealing" his shirt just you know, to cheer her up a bit, 'cuz at this point she feels like shit both mentally and physically.

and Kou be like: hold my beer, and unzips her jacket saying "look, I brought it here. you'll have it back either after we win... or will take it from my dead body. too bad, I won't be here to watch it tho"

Before and after - That moment when you realize you just spent 2+ hours coding an interface.Inside of a built-in interface. Because the one by default is just horrendous.

But you know what? I have no regret. This will just speed up the future dev, and I learnt how to adapt a terrible looking interface. Which is always useful to work with people who aren’t really tech-savy.
