States in the Cat are more similar to countries that we know today. Each state has its own peoples, beliefs, and governments. Though even with the differences, most of everyone in the Cat share very similar features.
Despite each state being its own country, not all borders touch. There are a lot of “common grounds” in which people don’t generally live due both to low population and bad living conditions.
In the Cat, there are also lands which can not be passed through. This is can be for any reason (i.e. dangerous creatures residing within the area, or grounds that are toxic and will kill you.) These places are named differently in each state and therefore are often labeled “unknown” on maps.
