Be careful what you wish for
It’s that time of year again. Time to stream some of my favorite (guilty pleasure) B-Christmas movies. I’m seeing a pattern of stories centering around an underdog reindeer/horse/donkey.
Niko and the Way to the Stars (The Flight Before Christmas).
A Finnish CGI film about Niko, a young reindeer who sets out to find his biological father who happens to be one of Santa’s flying reindeer. Niko is guided and supported by a squirrel acting as a father figure as it turns out that Santa’s Flying Forces are pretty much a bunch of raucous frat-boys.
Elliot: The Littlest Reindeer
A miniature horse (voiced by Josh Hutcherson) dreams of pulling Santa’s sleigh but is assigned goat herding duty at the ranch he resides in. Plus, the de facto reindeer leader at the ranch bullies/refuses to let Elliot train and run with the other reindeer during practices.
When Santa holds auditions for a new reindeer to pull his sleigh, Elliot and his goat friend Hazel stowaway to the North Pole tryouts where he wears false antlers to pass off as a little reindeer so he can participate in the tryouts. Elliot is a good horse but the reindeer in this movie act like entitled assholes through constant belittling towards others.
The Star (2017)
Sony Animation’s animal-centered telling of the Nativity.
A little donkey named Boaz (Bo) dreams of marching in the Royal Caravan but instead he grinds grain for the village miller. Bo escapes and is adopted by Mary and Joseph where he plans to run away when they travel to Bethlehem. Bo has a change of heart when one of the king’s assassins and two vicious dogs interrogate Bo and reveal the intent to find and harm Mary. For the time being, Bo and his dove and sheep companions track Mary and Joseph to warn them.
Bonus points for Steven Yeun as the voice of Bo. I consider this among his best animated VO roles because Yeun is so expressive as Bo. We’re talking really into his character. Like Mark Grayson (Invincible) and Speckle (Tuca & Bertie) levels of various emotions and expressions.
Almost bought one. Then I thought, why abuse my remaining organs?
TBT back in the nineties when some channels would air marathons of lesser known animated movies (Nick and Noel; Tom and Jerry: The Movie) during November and December. These movies were on free channels or the crappier cable channels. In retrospect, they were just a means of advertising toys for kids to add to their holiday want lists since those types of ads were aired during the movies.
I still miss those lazy weekends watching random non blockbuster cartoons (sometimes in waiting room TVs or at someone else’s home).
I ordered one.
I’ve been thinking about Baymax for two weeks so I figured that was a sign…treat myself.
Plus I saw a review/unboxing video and Baymax has shorter legs compared with the other Scentsy buddies so he won’t look weird with long dangly legs. (And I mean he’s not out of proportion with his character design).
When I had surgery last week one of the nurses was wearing a Baymax ID clip. It made me feel a shitload better.
