so i read the Hard in Hightown book (which is not very different, if at all, from the codex series you can get in DAI) and was struck all over again by several points in it -- mostly that every single character in it is based very obviously and directly on the DA2 characters, with the sole exception of Varric himself. there’s no “self-insert” character, ha.
but the thing is -- all of them have names, full descriptions, and backstories which are nearly identical, but slightly slanted, from their ‘real’ ones.... except for Anders. the ‘Anders’ character is described only as “a dour blond mage” and is a healer, but he’s never given a name, and is positioned as working for the Chantry’s own legitimate clinic. he’s given no other distinguishing features, and not even a lot of distinctive dialogue.
i think Varric was protecting him, by hiding and obscuring him even in his fiction.
