Actions and Tones are Important!
"I hate you." She said trying to frown as a smile kept appearing no matter how much she tried to stop it. I laughed in glee and amusement as I placed down my last card. I had just won for the third time in a row.
"I know, there's a long list of people so you're going to have to get in line," I said trying to keep the amusement out of my voice but like her smile it was present.
"Yeah well, I'm cutting to the front of the line! I don't understand how you keep beating me, it's not fair!" She pouted as I stuck out my tongue. My favorite part of the game was the banter during and after, we just couldn't help the smiles on our face and joy in our voices.
"Life isn't fair." I teased as I shuffled the cards for our next game, maybe this time I'll let her win.
Now, the same dialogue but with a different tone.
"I hate you." She said coldly, no emotion on her face. Her smile she used to have when she said that was gone along with the laughter the used to follow. I deserved it, but it didn't hurt any less than if I didn't.
"I know, there's a long list of people so you're going to have to get in line," I said softly, I tried my best to keep my sorrow out of my voice but it was more present than her pain.
"Yeah well, I'm cutting to the front of the line! I don't understand how you keep beating me, it's not fair!" She said getting emotional, no matter how much she tried to win, she never did. The pain in her voice made me wince, this was my least favorite part, the confrontation after the fight.
"Life isn't fair," I said sadly, and full of regret. It started with me trying to protect her but now I'm not sure what I am doing. Before I left I looked at her one more time before deciding next time I'm going to let her win.
See the difference? Don't forget about the tone and definitely don't forget about actions.
