Honestly I never saw the injury as killing her, merely neutralising a target. The spot where Mal was shot, the shoulder, is a classic target for soldiers and policemen alike because you have the largest likelihood of hitting the threat and stopping them - not necessarily killing them, but you’re not getting up from a direct hit to the torso anytime soon. Or at least, that’s my view!
