Just watched the odyssey. I give it a 7/10. I’m probably too attached to the source material but this version of Odysseus is very boring to me. Like I get that it’s an interesting take to make a version of the odyssey where the gods may or may not be real, and the main driving force of the story is in the breaching of the social contract we ow each other as mortals. But that makes the events of the story so random and Odysseus a more passive character. Nolan’s Odysseus is also not even smart! Even if you take out the gods you can keep the manipulate, mansplain, manwhore of it all! If the first cause of his guilt is the breaching of the law of hospitality in Troy, first of all, the were already going to sack Troy if they got in no matter if they used the horse or not. Second of all, at least make him kill the baby cowards not just dissociate as his men do all the work! Thirdly this breach of the contract has nothing to do with the conflicts of the rest of the story unless it’s just bad luck and karma that brings him this off course by through any of his own hubris. Also wild that they keep saying he’s somehow the only atheist in Ancient Greece but then he finally gets home by “giving his fate to the gods”. The problem is this whole movie he doesn’t fight fate at all things just happen to him and he goes along with it. So what was the point of that through line. Each island they go to being a breach of the law of zeus or whatever also gets so repetitive but random at the same time? Like they keep washing up on learn this lesson again island but the lesson is???? The golden rule??? Ok he learned that like 3 islands ago what’s the point of the next ones? And then they have to say it a million times in ithica too? They were too scared to make him unlikable and smart so he’s just guilty warcrimes sad boy the whole movie!!! If you want a grim dark realistic version of the odyssey whyyyy is Odysseus somehow less morally grey than in epic! Anyway Anne Hathaway, zendaya, lupita nyongo, and Robert Pattinson did an amazing job. The cinematography looked great loved the practical effects and the water looked amazing. I liked the scene with the dead ppl crawling out of the mud. Don’t like a single costume except zendayas and Robert Pattersons, the color grading was typical of a Nolan movie and you could tell a lot of effort was put in by everyone on the team.
