Paralyzed Marine Assaulted and Robbed - Continues the Fight
USMC veteran Randy Abbott
On Monday, 2 thieves approached Marine veteran Randy Abbott from behind his wheelchair. One started to cut the straps holding his surfboard. When Abbott protested, he was thrown from his wheelchair.
Randy Abbott spent 14 years on active duty as a Scout Sniper with the United States Marine Corps. That’s tough duty, and with America winding down from over 10 years of sustained combat operations, even for a Marine, it’s tough on the body. Abbott needed back surgery. During the surgery, his spinal cord was severed, leaving him paralyzed below the waist.
Abbott always found comfort in surfing. In spite what doctors had said, and thanks to specially designed surfboards he was able to get back into the water. He now surfs 3 to 4 times each week. His love for surfing, led him to start a non-profit organization, ‘The View from 42’. From their FaceBook page,
The View From 42 is a non profit helping people who have disabilities live beyond there disabilities, helping them with Post Traumatic Growth.
Abbott and The View run surf camps for kids with disabilities. He also trains ‘rescue to service’ dogs for disabled vets and those coping with PTSD.
Monday evening, the 2 thugs approached Abbott. He recounts,
“One guy was cutting the straps and I said ‘Hey, I’m paralyzed, don’t steal my surfboards!’”
“And then the other guy came at me and took a swing at me, and I took a swing at him. He missed, and I connected. I caught him with a pretty good uppercut.”
“The guy that was cutting the straps had come around behind me, and threw me out of my wheelchair, and then kicked my wheelchair and it rolled probably 50 feet down the parking lot. Then they threw my surfboards in the back of their (Toyota) 4Runner and took off.”
Abbott had a few scrapes and bruises, but most concerned about the loss of his customized surfboards.
It is often said, ‘What goes around, comes around.’ Abbott is a good man that spent years serving his country. After a tragedy left him paralyzed, he picked himself up, shirked his disability and dedicated his time to helping others.
When the story of his attack and theft was reported, the public responded. A ‘GoFundMe’ account was established to help replace the stolen custom surfboards. The goal was to raise $1200.00. At this writing, the fund has raised $4376.00.

Abbott vows to continue his efforts, but is overwhelmed by the response.
“When I have people who don’t even know me and they call me from Hawaii, Australia and France and say, ‘Hey, just get back in the water and surf and you’re gonna be ok. We love you buddy!’ That means a lot to me.”
Two of his customized surfboards have been recovered, but are badly damaged. The third board is still missing.
