Title: MAINT REQD: Adversity Medium: Digital/Film Photography and mixed media
(((showing at HIGH STREET GALLERY on June 24)))
Where are you from and how were you educated in art?
A southeast Texas artist with a self taught hobby in photography. Corey Louviere through high school showed me the in’s and out’s of a darkroom and increased my love of black and white film photography. Four years laterI was driving myself up the wall in the Galloway Business Building (Lamar University) realizing that the path I had chosen wasn’t really where I wanted to be. I sat in on a Keith Carter lecture and opted to take an extra semester to finish my bachelors in Business Administration and Marketing just to take one of his classes. One turned to two, and that fun filled hobby turned to a career. Working for myself led to a short career with the Beaumont Enterprise and Cat5 Magazine.
How do you describe your work?
I don’t see a distinct style in any of my work. The medium of photography has never mattered either. All that has ever mattered was whichever camera I had in hand and being at the right place at the right time. Making the photograph had always been easy part.
What are your influences?
There isn’t much that my eye’s see that isn’t an influence of some sort, but if I had to name a few things it would probably go like this. William Wegman turned me on to the oddity of photography and video (my first medium of choice), Mike and Doug Starn & Robert Frank worked me through my puberty stage of art, and for the last 10 years Pearl (my dog) has been my muse (if I had to choose a word for it). Respect should also be paid to Keith Carter. I’ve always seemed to find inspiration in his work.
What do you want people to take away from your show?
I’ve never had to defend my work or even talk about it. It’s also never been about what someone will take away from it, but what I work out personally in the process of making it. I’ve dealt with some of the largest struggles of my life over the last 12 months, and this is me working through them.
Any other thoughts?
Be mindful of time. It can easily run out.

The group said of the track: “‘Revenant’ is a reference to the people that exit your life, whether they choose to or not. The word itself is a synonym for ‘ghost’. This song mirrors the emotions one feels when…
