“Here, Williams brings together… seemingly disparate objects [which] take on new meanings — even uses — when placed together, just as the work is informed by the context in which it was made. This context is explicitly pointed to by the multiplication of the word “AIDS,” which Reagan refused to say until 1985, when the epidemic had already impacted tens of thousands of people in the US, including Williams’ artistic community. He reflected: ‘It was something which affected me very personally, because I had so many friends that had died from AIDS very early on.’”
