what SUCKS about being a dialogue-first writer who was in theater & watches too much tv is that i can SEE what all of the action around the words are and watch it play out while I'm typing everything out. but as soon as i actually have to write it down I'm at a loss for how to describe it like???

yeah at THIS particular moment it should be obvious that they're squinting their eyes bc i made that word in the dialogue in italics. OBVIOUSLY they're shaking their fists afterwards because theres the exclamation point at the end!

but no, i gotta put that shit in there, otherwise the reader gets to control what the characters are doing, and not everyone automatically gives the characters actions while they're talking like i do lmao

Nothing has made me fully accept my Researcher Writer Brain more than me just now looking up whether people in New Jersey call it soda or pop bc my PERSONAL first instinct is to call it coke and that is NOT how things are done outside of Texas

part of the Magic of writing for Kid Heroes is remembering what it was like to Be A Kid. and to Play Hero.

because back then, it didn't matter what evil you faced or what stood in your way. because the Good Guy Always Wins and Evil Will Always Be Vanquished. there’s no way they’ll ever be hurt or in danger, because its all just a Game

and thats what makes writing for teen and young adult heroes especially scary. because it becomes a dawning realization that these actions have always had consequences. and that they can catch up sooner than anyone would think

and its what ultimately makes writing adult heroes so tragic. because even in something as otherworldly, or fantastical, the consequences can still be just as, if not even more so dire.

There’s a difference between being intentional with your words, and writing something just to get the point across

Editing is the process that transforms the second part into looking more like the first. And then making it all flow effortlessly so that the reader has no clue how to tell the difference
