Expectation v/s reality So, we did #sunsetkayaking in Auckland on our last day in NZ. It's just something I had wanted to and @ritika.navodayacreations had no choice but to tag along. Expectations: Taking in the #auckland skyline from #rangitotoisland as the sun went down behind the city, and then gently paddling under the blanket of stars, me belting out my favourite romantic songs, and, you know, things just being all lovey-dovey mushy sushi. Reality: We chose a particularly windy day to do this, where the wind was supposed to pick up to 20 knots by sundown. Now, I, with zero navigational knowledge, had absolutely no inkling to what that translates IRL. So, first up, @ritika.navodayacreations and I were put on different kayaks because of our inexperience. Then we didn't end up kayaking to #rangitoto, our primary dest, but went to a relatively unfabled #motukorea island instead. I was paired with an American girl who had some "experience" with kayaks, but that was in rivers and open seas are a different ballgame altogether. Now on our return trip, the wind picked up as promised and the placid sea became livelier than a prancing child. It didn't matter as long as we were sheltered behind the island but the moment we came out in the open, it was a heart-in-mouth situ for us the beginners. The waves grew larger every second and the fear of capsizing in the dark waters was real. But, surprisingly, in that moment, it all slowed down for me. Yes, I was tired and the spray went into my eyes so they were burning with salt and I could see zilch. But I was not panicking. I just had to keep our kayak oriented at roughly 45 to waves and paddle. That's it. That's all I had to do, all I could do. And, instead of panicking, I enjoyed it. I even managed to pause and wonder at the city skyline in the distance with my bleary eyes. I sang the refrain "Annie, are you OK?" from #smoothcriminal over and over just to tease Annie behind (that millennial had no idea what the song was and that made me mad). I looked at the sky, the stars, and was really calm AF. It's strange, but I'm glad we had that adventure. Learning that we're but mere pawns against #nature made life simpler.
