Presidential elections may be before the scheduled time in Sri Lanka
Colombo : Sri Lankan President Maitripala Sirisena has held a meeting with the election organizers of his party, after which speculation is being made that the presidential elections may be held before the scheduled time. The organizers of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) were called on Monday for a special meeting at Rashtrapati Bhavan and they were apprised of the party’s future plans and restructuring activities.
Rohan Laxman said, we discussed the future steps of the party which will start from January. The President told the organizers that they should be prepared to gather in reform programs. Sirisena can hold presidential elections ahead of scheduled time after January 8 next year. It is not clear whether organizers were discussed in the meeting or preparations for the party’s presidential election.
Sirisena has directed the SLFP election organizers to be ready for the election year, saying that the provincial and presidential elections will be held next year. Sirisena has also indicated the general elections next year. According to the prescribed schedule, the presidential elections should be held in November 2019 and this process should be completed by January 2020.
President Ernesto Despair of Prime Minister Ranil Vikramasinghe and was replaced by President Sirisena for his oath of office to Mahinda Rajapaksa. Sirisena is also the president of the SLFP.
