Every time Jun smiles, Ran falls a little bit deeper in love.
Cryptid AU part three! I’ve been working on this a lot tonight and added a ton of melodrama and angst... So you have that to look forward to, eventually. I’m trying to nail down all the plot points before I share too much, so that I don’t have to go back to change things later on. For now, have some **cryptid facts**:
Cryptids are real, they blend in with society and are registered by the government. The general populace low key knows about them but don’t know who is registered, as their identities are highly protected. Depending on the race there is some racism and/or fetishizing that occurs. Some cryptids come out but most stay hidden
5% of people have supernatural blood of some sort, so its pretty rare.
Jun and Akira’s family are werewolves, and can transform at will. All of them have pointy teeth (yeet). Their whole line has been werewolves or at least part werewolf for a long ass time. It’s a lineage.
Werewolves are discriminated against/feared, so Jun and Akira really don’t want people to know about their identities.
Akira and Jun’s parents are just as absent as in canon. They are famous doctors doing work to help cryptids that are discriminated against and pushed to the side of society. They are known for their work, but are not out as werewolves themselves (the world isn’t ready for that yet.)
The Makimuras are fae. Families of cryptids tend to stick together, hence their looking after the Fudo children. However, they are only part fae, not full. (From their dads side) I’m going with the dmcb Makimura family, not the manga version.
The Asukas are straight up angelic. Eden is an angel, and kind of showed up and then left again. Professor Asuka is a renowned cryptozoologist, but isn’t a very good father. Angels aren’t very common (at all, they’re basically still legend) so the Asukas can get away with a lot of shit (and are highly desired by the government).
Therefore, Ran has psychic abilities. And can sprout extra eyes and shit when she’s doing psychic stuff.
Plot point: Ryo doesn’t actually know about his angelic heritage. He’s just really into cryptozoology, and wants to follow his fathers lineage. He’s also very perceptive and picks up on who is cryptid or part cryptid very easily. Again, he shrugs this off (boy, how dense can you be…).
Ryo got more of the angelic blood than Ran did, and therefore has an angelic/winged form... he just doesn’t know it.
Ryo knows a bit about Rans psychic powers (although she denies it) and has a high healing factor, so he just thinks his missing mom was some sort of psychic, and he was unfortunate enough not to gain any powers.
Ran and Ryo aren’t super close, and the fact that Ran is hiding secrets from him means that they’re kind of stuck in that dynamic. They’re also both pretty standoffish by nature, and basically just co-habitate.
Miki is still the witch of track and field, and deals with a fair amount of discrimination and fetishization because of her half-fae status. She’s still a popular blogger, and tries her best to promote ideas of love and support for all humans and crypts.
Miki Kuroda is still a spider. She doesn’t really try to hide it either, to Mikis chagrin. People are both terrified by her and think she’s cool. She can transform like in dmcb, and also has a half-spider form.
Crypid AU Part 5:
Ran and Jun were low-key a thing before the Asuka’s fucked off to US for six years. Asuka broke Jun’s heart when she left and Jun hasn’t seriously seen anyone since. People at work give her shit for being single.
Ran comes back and is like “Jun I still love you I never stopped loving you” and Jun is pissed.
So Jun’s like “No. We’re just gonna be friends, you already broke my heart once, you’re on thin fucking ice.” She’s cold towards Ran for a long while after that, but they’re both still in love with the other and it’s pretty obvious where they’re headed.
Meanwhile Ryo and Akira are just circling each other now that they’re older (Ryo left when he was like 11). They get along swimmingly and just pick up where they left off (like in canon).
Akira is 18 and Ryo is 17 when they meet up again. Ryo is technically a year younger (or 8 months, whatever), but graduating a year early because he’s just Like That.
Asuka one year older than Jun, and therefore left for America and graduated while Jun was still in school (22 and 21 years old, respectively)
Bonus points: Jun was still an olympic swimmer when Ran left and then the whole... situation happened, which in combination with the emotional toll of Ran leaving caused Jun to feel mentally unwell enough to quit swimming. She also stopped corresponding with Ran at that point (Ran was so busy with work that she got caught up in it and didn’t really notice). I’ll get into this again later, trust me!! (melodrama, yum)
Ran doesn’t expect Jun to have changed much when she gets back—she asks why she hasn’t seen Jun in the news for the olympics at all and Jun blows up at her—her entire life has changed since Ran left, and Ran didn’t even bother to try and stay in touch.
Ran is still super loyal to Jun, and normally wouldn’t have left her. However, the job she got in America was kind of her dream and the chance of a lifetime, and so she got so caught up in her excitement that she assumed Jun would just be fine with her leaving.
Akira and Jun have The Best Sibling Dynamic Ever. They’re super close and emotionally supportive to the max.
Ryo and Ran on the other hand have a more distant relationship. They get along passively, but also fight sometimes, and are far apart enough in age that Ran is less of a sister and more of a guardian figure. Ryo went to America with Ran because she was old enough to be his legal guardian and their father didn’t want to take care of him (he’s somehow actually the worse parental figure of the two). Because Ryo was so young the decision was sort of made for him, although he was excited about switching to a specialized school.
Jun’s bff high school teacher is in this too and she knows Jun’s true identity as a werewolf. She’s the Pure Good Friend.
Ran is 28 and Jun is 27
The Fudos are both bisexual icons and the Asukas are just too gay to function.
Jun teaches literature: she got a teaching degree after majoring in literature in undergrad. Shifting to be a teacher was something she had already been considering, but had thought she would be an olympic swimmer for a long while first.
