D4 Lazy Prep/Improv Tools
Sometimes things happen at the table you’re not prepped for. Here are a few tools I use to keep the game moving while still giving the right kind of feel for the situation.
1. Spells as not spells. You need a flamethrower trap? Burning hands. You need quick rules for fighting in a snowstorm? Use sleet storm. Your characters need to cross a pit of constrictor snakes? Evards black tentacles. Once you start using spells as a tool box for other encounters you’ll see how limitless your options are.
2. Reskinning. Need a cursed two headed snake? Death dog. Need an animated fart of death? Invisible stalker. Need a giant robotic machine that detached its limbs to attack at range? 2 flying swords and animated armor.
3. Prepped Random Tables. I know the name is a bit of an oxymoron, but hear me out. While you’re preparing your game think of four things they are likely to encounter that are not related to your main quest for Flora, Fauna, Locations, NPCs, Quests, and foreshadowing things for main quest (Luke a frozen orc to warm of a white dragon) and write them down. It helps you be ready for the random stuff in your game, but it also gives you notes just Incase you’re taken unaware. (See above for my session tables)
4. Conditional Flavor. Tired of just rolling damage? Have the ogres club know them back 10’ and prone. Is a critical hit very violent? Make an adjacent ally poisoned (disgusted) on their next turn. Did a pc just decapitate someone? Have his friend be frightened. It just adds more flavor and encourages descriptive actions during a very mathy part of the game.
(Edit: forgot to actually add my example notes... sorry)
