no but ive only read a tell tale heart from the real author but just from that,,,i dont think poe would be very normal abt relationships especially with ranpo......i didnt finish perfume by patrick suskind (got kinda bored not bc it's bad but bc i just found something i like more ) but the secretive and quiet but extreme obsession of the main character reminded me so much of poe??? and i think i read somewhere that the real ranpo chose edogawa rampo as a penname because it sounds so much like edgar allan poe and even rampo's book title is like poe’s right it only added japanese at the beginning before the ‘tales of mystery and imagination’ so it's not rlly far off that their bsd counterparts would totally be paranoid and intense w each other <333

dont be sorry abt loving this ship a lot!! in fact,,,if possible, could u share a lil bit more of ur headcanons abt them hehehheehehhe i dont see them portrayed in this light often (like u said v v rare)

i think telltale heart is a good example of poe's writing tbh, his works often revolve around obsession and delusion but also with grief if you look at "the raven" for example (especially his poems are about grief and death a lot so)

i've not read perfume but i know the general plot i think and yeah it probably fits well

AND YES edogawa rampo chose this pen name partly bc of edgar allan poe, he also references poe's works in his mysteries which is fun!! both of them also partly write horror, especially edogawa rampo's works shook me to the core, it's so well-written but also so disturbing, i wouldn't recommend them just like that bc of body horror and uhh fetish writing ig? but the cases of akechi kogoro are also so fun to read as well and you can actually try and solve the mystery yourself!!

ANYWAYS, this was a lot of praising lol, i just really really love both of their works :D and these works are also part of why i think they're both fucked up in the head lol

my biggest headcanon i'm saving for when my fanfic catches up to what i've already written lol, so i'm not spoilering that (but if you wanna know i can dm you :3)

other headcanons that i've curated during the past months:

poe has some sort of dissociative disorder, he dissociates when he's too overstimulated or sth triggers him, also he possibly struggles with intrusive thoughts

ranpo has autism and npd

poe has a brother in america, his parents died when he was young

he had a drug or alcohol problem after he lost to ranpo - the guild giving him an opportunity to get revenge motivated him enough to mostly recover though

poe has some really dark fantasies and sometimes he lets it slip during crime investigations - ranpo doesn't mind, he's even amused

ranpo also secretly loves it when poe brags

ranpo and poe started stalking each other (maybe even since the beginning) until one of them realised and send a very clear signal that the other couldn't miss and since then they've been flirting via sending secret messages in a language only they know to each other - basically consensual stalking (yes i'm completely normal)(also i haven't decided who realised first but it was probably ranpo - i love the thought of ranpo getting all flustered too tho)

poe didn't only lose to ranpo in that mystery game. he also lost his reputation, his friends, his admirers. there was more going on there, they probably met before the competition and they were intrigued by each other before it all went downhill

when poe isolated himself he only had contact to his brother who desperately tried to get him out of his headspace. but he himself isn't the best at having stable relationships + he's also an alcoholic (inspired by irl poe's brother henry)

they're both incredibly jealous and do anything to keep the others attention on them (ranpo giving candy to poe to get his attention back, poe being pretty dramatic and acting up a lot, also obeying every wish ranpo has)

ranpo must have told poe about fukuzawa and fukuchi for him to be able to write about their past for when they were drawn into his novel - so that means they actually sat together and talked about their past. which is insane to me

i do have another headcanon post but i couldn't find it ahhh, but it has to be buried somewhere in all the ranpoe postings lol

Poe and Ranpo shared one class together, English.

After getting situated and they were given time to work by themselves Ranpo and Poe would start talking about school, their lives outside of school, and other personal things.

Ranpo always did most of the talking, Poe didn't mind, not at all. Hearing Ranpo talk about himself was very interesting, hearing the change in his voice whenever he spoke about something he was infatuated with or something that he had a strong sense of dislike towards.

Poe was never really good at eye contact but Ranpos eyes were just so inviting that he couldn’t help but stare at them. Watching how they always looked a bit tired and bored but at the mentions of his father and his best friend they seem to get a bit wider and lively. Or when he spoke about his favorite crime documentaries.

At random points in the day he always goes back to thinking about Ranpos eyes. He describes them, their color, their shape, their feel. He describes how they look when he speaks on different topics. Although his voice can be described as bored Poe thinks that he voice is very descriptive when speaking. His eyes tell more, Poe thinks.

Poes a writer, when he describes Ranpo it sounds as if he's describing the worlds most beautiful artifact, or perhaps a jewel, or a painting. But it is neither of those things. The one he is describing is none other than the boy who sits next to him in English that he is so hopelessly in love with.

Pages and pages of just him. Drawing after drawing, erased lines, colored in, some discarded because they didn’t bring out his beauty. He was his muse for years, he drew him day after day.

His rival was his muse although he was never sure why he couldn’t seem to get the other out of his mind. He convinced himself it was purely because he had to best him in anything and everything.

Though the years to come proved otherwise. It wasn’t because he needed to beat him. It was because he admired him, deep down he knew that but didn’t want to admit it. So now here he is talking to his rival about the most trivial things. He was confused and wanted to walk away, but he couldn’t he was drawn in by the warm sound of his voice, the slight up turn of his lips, his half open eyes, his carefree energy he seemed to have in any situation.

Something about him seemed so inviting. He never once thought about being able to relax or be as carefree as the other boy, it never once crossed his mind that he was able to do such things, not now, no then, not ever..

But maybe he could? The other seemed to relax him, how? He doesn’t know, he doesn’t bother thinking about it too much either he doesn’t focus on anything else but the sound of the others voice and the warm atmosphere.

Maybe his rival isn’t what he will call the other boy now, acquaintance is more accurate. Friends seems to familiar he thinks. The idea of calling him his friend is a nice one though. Maybe one day he’ll be able to call him his friend.

What if Ranpo was the first to fall in love first. He fell in love first because he couldn’t forget Poe, the first person to give him chills and someone he thought was a good detective.

And what if Poe was just genuinely excited about having a rival. Ranpo knew this but he couldn’t help himself from falling in love with Poe even if he knew Poe didn’t like him back.

Poe eventually found out, and Ranpo knows he knows so he takes a risks and asks Poe out on a date. Poe says yes *he wants to see what’ll happen if he’ll catch feelings for Ranpo or not, he also thinks the thought is enjoyable.*

They had a very enjoyable date. They went on a few more and Poe had started to develop feelings for Ranpo, Ranpo was happy about this. Although it took Poe a bit of time to realize his feelings for Ranpo. But once he did they had started dating.

All’s well that ends well. :)

Poe and Ranpo go on dates everyday. Even if it’s a trip to the grocery store they call it a date. Going for a walk? It’s a date. Going to the doctors? Okay! It’s a date we can grab lunch after! Is what Ranpo always says. Poe agrees because how could he say no to a date with his darling Ranpo.

They call anything they do together a date. It’s cute how they never seem to get tired of calling everything and anything a date.

Sometimes they go on what people call a formal date, some lunch or dinner. Sometimes Poe will cook something for Ranpo and sometimes Ranpo will try to cook for Poe. Sometimes they cook together and call that their date because they tend to get distracted by one another and start dancing and singing together. Sometimes they’ll even forget about the food and just dance enjoying the others embrace.

Sometimes while Poe writes and Ranpo sits there eating or taking a nap they’ll call it a date. Poe reading to Ranpo is also a date.

Them slow dancing? A date! Them singing together? A date! Anything and everything is a date to those two.

They go on dates everyday, they spend a lot of time together. They love every single one of their dates.

But if they had to choose they’d say their favorite dates are when they cuddle while drinking some warm coffee and hot chocolate with Karl in their laps while listening to the rain fall. It’s silent expect for their breathing and the rain or Poes casual humming of the song his mother used to sing to him when he was younger or Ranpo humming the tune.

Those dates are their favorite.

Poe likes to take Ranpo places. He likes to take him places he thinks are pretty and would be relaxing. But no matter where Poe takes Ranpo it’s always somewhere with a special reasoning behind it.

Sherman’s Garden for example. Poe took Ranpo there once for vacation because he used to go there with his parents all the time and it held some of his happiest memories with his parents there. Poe wanted to create more happy memories with his new family.

Poe took Ranpo to go butterfly watching because of when he used to live in England and he would use the forest to help escape from his home life. The butterflies helped with his descriptive words and brought him a sense of comfort.

They also remind him of his mother of when she would go sit with him in the forest and listen to him rant about the different types of butterflies he had seen. She would also listen to him describe them and offer new words.

Every place Poe takes Ranpo has a meaning behind it. Ranpo knows this very well, Poe never has to directly tell him because he knows Ranpo knows. Ranpo knows by the way Poe speaks about these places and the way he has this far off look in his eyes when he looks and speaks about them.

So Ranpo never has to ask because he knows, and he knows if Poe were to want to explain the details he would. So until Poe wants to Ranpo’ll wait to hear them. For now Ranpo’s content with Poe sharing these beautiful and meaningful places with him.

They’re so in love it makes me sick but I also envy them because it’s a type of love that you don’t need to see the physical affection side of to know how deeply they love each other. You can tell by hearing them speak to or about each other.

Ranpo always sounds so excited when talking about Poe. He doesn’t have his usual bored or childish demeanor when talking about him. He always has the widest grin with his eyes a bit open but not fully. With pure admiration and love in his voice.

When Poe talks to or about Ranpo he talks softer than his usual voice, with eyes that light up and a fond smile on his face. He has pure love and adoration laced his in voice when speaking.

And when they look at each other. Their eyes are always softer and brighter when staring at one another. The looks of pure bliss when the other talks about something they enjoy or excited about something.

The smiles they give each other. The fond ones. The soft ones. The happy ones. The playful teasing ones. The smirks.

You see them and you can just tell by the atmosphere around them that they are so completely and utterly in love with one another.

It’s cute, you don’t see couples like them often. Ones who love each other like it’s their last day on earth. Ones who see their love and only their love. The couples who only have one single love in their life, and that being the one they are with already. Ones who look at each like they’re engraving ever single one of theirs features in their mind like they won’t ever see them again.

They’re the couple who in any life they will always find a way back to each other and have a new life together with new stories to add to their collection full of the ones they’ve already written together.

Racer AU

Poe would be a very talented racer but never spoke to the reporters and such because he didn’t like all the cameras and flashing lights and the crowds were always huge. Ranpo talks to them and everytime he always has this bored look on his face.

They met after one of Ranpos races because Poe went with Lucy to go see and Poe had gotten separated from Lucy and got crowded by a bunch of reporters and had started panicking. Ranpo went and shooed them away. He also thought they were stupid since it was obvious Poe was uncomfortable and panicking and they kept asking him questions and getting closer.

After that Poe and Ranpo had a mutual admiration for each other. They didn’t see each other often but when they did they always went and got lunch together

Fukuzawa is Ranpos teacher

Poe was always interested in racing but his foster father said it’s something that he shouldn’t do because it was a waste of time and not a real career path. His mother told him if he really did want to do it he should.

He ended finding a guy who would race while he was on vacation in Italy and he taught Poe the basics Poe caught on pretty fast and he did it for fun for a while. Poe got a professional teacher who taught him more details on it later on. It was the italian guys teacher.

Poe later on went professional! His mother was very supportive while his father voiced his disapproval. But to Poe that didn’t matter he had his mothers support and that’s all that mattered. She goes to his races when she can and she watches on TV when she’s unable to go in person.
