Honestly these people being upset that theres a fem white/nightfury that is 99% gonna be involved in a romance kinda shows to me that they havent been paying attention to how the HTTYD series handled romance subplots?
There was Astrid and Hiccup in the first movie, but the movie never made that the focal point of the plot. Both Hiccup and Astrid had fairly fleshed out characters, which most people should be happy about since the female character was not only strong and had her own goals but wasn’t solely there for romance. They talked about more than just each other romance also. The movie ended with cute mutual feelings being returned after having spent time together, actually talking about the story’s issues and participating in the action along with the rest of the group.
In the second movie there was a LOT more romance BUT STILL the team did not sacrifice the story for it. They established Hiccup’s parents relationship and had them talk, participate in the story and show how a good couple can have hardships but still come back together and love one another. And again, Hiccup’s mother was ONE BAD ASS DRAGON RIDER BABE and wasn’t there for romance only. She was a huge influence on how Hiccup learned more about dragons and became a good support for him despite them not having any time together in his youth. There was also that Hiccup and Astrid bit at the beginning again, but it was in there to show how their relationship developed from when they were younger to now, and they were cute as heck.
So yeah, if there is another romance subplot - or even plot at this point since this third movie is focusing on finding more of Toothless’ kind - I trust that the team will do a good job at mixing it in with other bits of the story. Its also too early to have such doubts LMAO
