Listen, I know the general consensus on the weird rap Tugger is that he sucks and is weird and ugly, and like. I agree. however i finally sat down and watched his version of the song and like. ????? I genuinely was so invested. he's so ugly and so beautiful. he's such a bad version of my favorite character. he's so cute. He's horribly interpreted. i suddenly understood how mother birds feel when they see their wretchedly ugly spawn. I feel so protective over him. That's my son. I got up after watching the rap tum tugger and stared in the mirror and genuinely teared up. He's so cute i love him that's my GOAT!!!! I LOVE ALL VERSIONS OF THE RUM TUM TUGGER!!! INCLUDING THE ONES THAT SUCK AND ARE UGLY!!!
every so often i start thinking about Him and tonight is that time
i found out there’s a rap version of the rum tum tugger and of course i had to see it. it’s…okay. like it’s good but also bad. there was so much potential! and i thought it was composed by somebody else! no! it’s by ALW! there obviously wasn’t much research put into it because it felt way too chaotic, even for tugger. it just didn’t sound right, and not because it was rap. it didn’t even sound like rap! i’m rambling now but i need to go on. the dance solo was SHIT as well. it just looked like he was moving. god never mind i hate it now. i can’t even look at it. in a youtube comment, somebody mentioned that they could have done different genres for different cats, which honestly would be very cool. it makes sense because this tugger felt out of place.
AU that Rap Tugger is actually a younger cousin of Rock Tugger, and whenever he comes to visit he’s always hitting on Misto
So I’ve been seeing a lot of Rap Tugger on my dash today and whilst typically I’m not a fan, the fact that he calls himself the “jelli-coolest cat” and Misto the “magi-coolest” cat is adorable. Then, at 22h41 CET a new headcanon crashed through my window and beat me over the head with a rake.
@guyavot on Discord a while back brought up the idea that Rap Tugger was a younger relation of Rock Tugger, which I love. Rap Tugger seems a bit younger than his Rock counterpart, let’s say he’s 18 or so, whereas Rock Tugger is in his early-mid 20s.
Anyway, my new headcanon is that Rap Tugger has the biggest, dorkiest teenage crush on his big cousin Rock Tugger’s boyfriend Misto. He constantly shows off to try and impress him, and frequently challenges Rock Tugger to all sorts of ridiculous contests..
Misto thinks it’s hilarious, and that Rap Tugger is a sweet little guy.
Rock Tugger takes it far more seriously than he lets on.
hi i’m an unironic rap tugger fan
Rap Tugger
Saw a clip of Tugger’s reworked number from the London Revival.
I expected worse, though my expectations were admittedly quite low. It’s still very bad.
For some reason, Tugger himself sings almost none of it. The lines bounce between different characters, not always quite making sense who’s singing what. It sounds like everyone sang the “terrible bore” line together! Like, most numbers in Cats are not sung by the character being sung about, but Tugger’s is one of the exceptions to the rule. He’s gotta hype himself.
Then, there’s the beat. One the chorus “The Rum Tum Tugger is a curious cat” is sung pretty much the same as in the rock version. But, “for he will do as he do do” is, though still sung, not rapped, the same notes with a different beat. It slows done the speed of that line, while most of the lines in the verses are sped up. The result is that the verses are borderline incoherent, especially when more than one character is singing, while the song slows down on “do do”, so suddenly I’m five years old again.
Heh heh. Doo-doo.
Really, the song doesn’t sound much like rap. It replaces the rock guitars with a techno beat, changes the pace the worlds are sung, and scatters most of Tugger’s lines among the crowd. Though, at the speed the verses are sung, I don’t think a single person could sing a whole verse without tripping over themselves.
The biggest revelation is that the problems aren’t really with the character of Rap Tugger, but the fact that his number was botched.
