The legacy of Tough Love.
My dad was no expert, or even interested in a soft approach to any aspect of raising me. SO my experience, knowledge and general understanding of how to approach being a dad was always slightly deformed. I had to start with, “Okay, i know for sure im NOT going to do this…”, and take it from there. Much of what i use does come from what my understanding (which is always growing) of the kind of father God is. Patient, understanding, forgiving, supportive, firm, loving, etc. But, there are times, the words, phrases, and habits that were pushed onto me from my dad creep in. I have to remember, and i am gently reminded (by my amazing wife) that kids require first afirmation that you love and understand their needs, the second whatever the correction might be.
I love my kids, and their well being, sense of self worth, self esteem and emotional/spiritual stability is the most important thing to me. Tough love has its place, no doubt, but i prefer the sandwhich method of correction. Compliment, encouragement, correction, where the mistake was made, and then confirmation that you love them and believe in them completely.
Thats all for now i guess.
