A never-before-documented flower blooms on one of world's rarest trees

Only about two dozen Karomia gigas trees exist in their wild Tanzanian habitat. It's so rare, it doesn't have a known nickname in English, Swahili, or the local languages around the forest reserves it's found in. But its new flower is a hopeful sign for its survival.

Araucaria hunsteinii

Some more Klinki araucaria at the botanic garden Gondwana arboretum, Auckland, New Zealand. These trees are around the back north and north west side of the New Guinea section. Really cool to see the waterfalling foliage on some examples. Very cool shapes seen in various trees here:

Araucaria hunsteinii

Klinki Araucaria, Species ambassador I would will call him, hes the one with the sign out the front. Really cool tree. its nice to see the difference in foliage at the top versus bottom of this tree they exhibit hetrophylla like many araucaria and have different leafs. The lower foliage looks similar to Bunya but the upper foliage is very iconic and diagnostic in my opinion! super cool. I think this is him: -37.007647678525935, 174.90673951488

Araucaria hunsteinii

Group of Klinki Araucaria, also Rassu or Pai. Super cool to see them at the botanic gardens, Gondwana arboretum, Auckland, New Zealand. They are rare in general but also in New Zealand these are the only trees i know of. for a while i thought some Bunya i had seen may be Klinki but seeing several here makes it a lot easier to see the morphological differences. the seed in particular seen in the last image is particularly interesting and very different from Bunya with a small seed and large wing while Bunya have large seed that takes up most of the wing space. very cool I imagine the wing adaptation is for further dispersal? however i only found them directly under the trees. would be interested to go have another look. these trees are part of the more southern cluster the location is in the middle of the three-ish pictured here however to my understanding this entire grove is Klinki. Intresting too to see some Epicormic Shoots on a previously cut section.

Araucaria angustifolia

Paraná araucaria, big boy at the botanic garden in Auckland, New Zealand. Images here feature a single tree amongst many planted Parana. One of the biggest in the park by the looks of him, big trunk! Interesting the branches go all the way down to ground on some morphs, he is an example of this cool to see branches at eye height. Some in the collection are more candelabra shape. Amazing tree.

Agathis lanceolata

Koghis Kauri, Ag.lanceolata are rare in general, let alone New Zealand. pictures are from two occasions in summer and winter of 2026, This tree is located in the Auckland Domain besides a Queensland one. Stephen Thorpe linked this on his INaturalist. Wollemia nobilis

Wollemi Tree! Monotypic genus in-between araucaria and agathis, super cool! a living fossil discovered in the 90's know from fossils but now proven to be alive, critically endangered but alive! Very cool Australian tree, this one is just a baby and the only one I know of in New Zealand outside the botanical gardens in Auckland.
