O’Hare is such a huge airport, the odds of bumping into someone you know, especially two days before Christmas, are astronomically low.
Of course, Shane M.adej has this exact amount of bad luck, because why shouldn’t the universe have a bit of fun at his expense?
So there he is. December 23rd, fresh off an overbooked flight that got postponed three times, trying to remind himself that they’re gonna have fun, his parents are gonna love his new boyfriend Ryan, and that they won’t have to set foot in this hell-on-earth airport for another two weeks. He’s struggling with their suitcases on a cart, suffocating in his winter coat, and trying to remember where Scott said he’d be picking them up, when he almost crashes his cart into another.

“Hoooolyyyy, it’s cold!” Shane Madej cries dramatically as he closes the door of the hotel behind himself and a hustling Kelsey Impicciche. Kelsey, for her part, can only emphatically nod. She’s bundled from head to toe and still frozen to the core. She’d heard rumblings about how this year was set to have one of the worst winters in the nation’s history and brother, they weren’t lying.
It’s crazy outside. Like being trapped inside a snow globe shaken by a toddler on a massive sugar high. Snow, snow, snow! Wild whirlwinds of fluffy flakes and blasting cold winds and…just, a complete nightmare. It’s a nightmare outside and it’s how she finds herself trapped here with Shane.

Once they reached the street, they both stopped, and something in the air shifted and lightened up. Adam looked at Annie, radiant in the orange glow of the streetlight overhead, and pulled out his phone to take another picture. She wasn’t smiling in this one, but she still looked gorgeous, and she didn’t even say anything about it – she just rolled her eyes fondly and took out her phone to snap a photo in return.
“There. Now we’re even.”

Kelsey reaches to take the phone from Shane’s hand, and he lets her, and she types in the word confirmation and as the results begin to populate, Kelsey filters through them, until she sees one in particular that makes her breath catch in her throat, fingers frozen. She doesn’t click on it, and Shane snatches his phone away from her, and they stare at each other; she’s never seen panic in his eyes. Shane doesn’t scare easily. But here, his brown, Tennessee whiskey eyes are looking at her and then he looks away and Kelsey stares blindly at the television.

She blinks more, stretching with a moan and sitting up, the blanket slipping from her shoulders as she does.
