How is the process of choosing the perfect tattoo? And how is it done? Is there a traditional way, or now a more modern technique is preferred? ✨
Oh ho ho. Pele. You have NO idea of how long it took me to find the PERFECT tattoos for each of these siblings! And even for my other Samoan OCs I’ve created so far! Lol.
And also, to tell you the truth. I’ve NEVER have a samoan tradition tattoos. Because I’m not allowed to have tattoos.
BUT. I have SEEN it! And trust me…it looked painful…😰
I could still remember them crying a bit about it but that’s the process. And if you’re wondering of what it is. It is THIS one.
Yup. It’s these tools that they use to carve up on your skin.
I’ll try to break it down of what each of these tools are called and what they do!
This tool up there is called AU. This is the primary tool for tattooing. It's made up of three parts: a small comb made of sharpened bone or boar's husk, a turtle shell plate, and a wooden handle. The comb's teeth vary in width to create different line thicknesses. They said it’s the IMPORTANT tool because it’s the one that will PAINT on their skin! Which I will explain ABOUT that paint!
But I can’t seem to find a photo reference to show it to you. So I’ll try to explain it to you. Those paint are collected from burning candle nuts or lama nuts. The soot is then mixed with sugar water to create the ink. That’s how they make the ink!
And now for the next tool!
That tool! Is called a SAUSAU! A wooden rod used to strike the AU and drive the pigment into the skin. Like banging that stick on top of the comb brush to get it marked onto the skin!
And lastly to make sure to keep the pigment stick onto the skin. They used a palette! Which is using either a coconut shell or taro leaf and pat on top of the pigment as it try to stick onto it!
And in order for them to use these tools. They need a Tufuga! A Samoan word for “Tattoo Artist”. And they’re good to go!
And if you wanna know in ACTION! Here’s a short video of it! But I must warn you…don’t know if it’s painful to look but you’ve been warned! Let me know of what you think!
Thank you for sending the ask though! I really do enjoy sharing the culture to you and the others! And also, don’t be surprised of how LONG it takes for the Toa siblings receiving their tattoos doing THIS way😅 Love ya, pele!😘💖
