I decided to jump right back in and draw this group shot for the purpose of revealing everyone to tumblr!#I would be more than happy to answer any questions anyone has about this candied cast...#You can imagine I have lots to say on both their creation as well as their personalities! 🍬🧡💙🧡🍬

In the mid-1980s, animated adaptations of arcade games were commonplace— for example, Hanna Barbera's Pac-Man or Saturday Supercade's Q*Bert. Both of these shows, for lack of a better term, 'Americanize' the designs of the titular characters, so I got to thinking...

"What would a mid-1980s cartoon based off Rascal look like?"

Seeing as I've had prior experience in drawing faux animation cels, I decided to put that talent to the test and whip up not only a cel drawing but also a painted background for a scene for a hypothetical 1985 Rascal cartoon! 🍬🧡💙🧡🍬

You might notice the lineart's faded a bit!#A lot of animation cels up for grabs online have faded inks— most especially cels from Season One of Spongebob Squarepants #So I wanted to replicate that specific detail so I could achieve as authentic of a cel-drawn look as possible #If anyone's interested in seeing them I have a few concept drawings for American Rascal as well as SourStack #... SourStack? Oh that's right... I personally ship Mr. Stackman and Sour Sally together #I just drew cutesy art of them together the other night that I may end up posting here sometime! 💖✨

This coming weekend will mark the first year anniversary of when I first drew the Sugar Rush Squad, Rascal's rag-tag team of beatniks, altogether— and seeing how close these candied caddies are to me, I decided to draw key artwork of them in their entirety for the occasion! 🍬🧡💙🧡🍬

I find this year's iteration just OOZES with improvement all across the board #I think that may just be because the 2023 iteration had no color but it goes beyond that even #The lineart is smoother and I've finally found a consistent and stylized way to draw everyone #The original iteration of this drawing was also the first time I had drawn Choco Chuck's now-final design!#And while I didn't include said iteration I assure you his expression is almost 1:1 because it is just that funny #His design anniversary will be this Sunday and you can bet that I'm going to draw a silly doodle for it #Oafish as he may be... the man deserves a nice ice cream cake #''CHOCO CHUCK WANTS ICE CREAM!'' — Choco Chuck 2023

I thought it would be fun to make small character cards styled after old arcade flyers from Japan for each character in Rascal's candied cast, starting with everyone's favorite bunny boy Rascal! 🧡💙🧡

#Star's Art #Star's OCs #Rascal #Rascal Arcade #Sprite Art #Coolness #I felt as though it would only be fitting to introduce each character with a cutesy introductory card...#... so here's Rascal's! 🧡💙🧡#It took some experimentation to get this to look exactly how I wanted it to #But I quite like the end result and am excited to make more for the remainder of the cast!#The later ones might be a bit bigger as the character sprites only get larger from here on out #But I'm certain I'll find a good way to make it work!#For real though... the specific aesthetic of 'Japanese arcade flyers' is SUCH an underrated one #Once I get everything specific I need sprited for it I absolutely plan on making a full flyer for Rascal #It wouldn't be the first time I made something to make it seem like Rascal is an actual 1983 arcade game...#... but we'll get to that a bit later 👀

Well, well, it looks like somebody would like to say hello! Uh, but who exactly might they be...?

Meet Rascal! Rascal is the star of a faux arcade game I one day hope to bring to fruition, and for the past week or two, I have been drawing him and the other colorful characters in the Rascal cast nonstop! There were several different ways I thought about introducing this character to followers of my blog, though @shrimpuufriend and @stephysalcido suggested I ought to make this cute animation of him waving to start it all off!

Expect to see more Rascal content in the near future, because let me tell you— there's a lot of it! 🍬🧡💙🧡🍬

Rascal has arrived to tumblr!!#A good portion of my mutuals have already seen this little goober privately...#... but it was only a matter of time before I started posting art of him publicly!#Rascal is actually one of my oldest OCs dating back to mid-2017 or so where he had a completely different look #He had always been an 'early 80s arcade mascot' type character but I REALLY wanted to hammer that home with his new design #What I came up with both succeeded in making him look like a genuine arcade game character...#... as well as the cutest character in all of fiction XD #Funnily enough the animation in this post is a 2023 remaster of a gif I drew of Rascal waving in late 2017 #Just a bit of the ol' Star Trivia!#Rascal also has a large cast of characters with varying personalities similar to games like Q*bert and Mappy #And I am just S O excited to introduce y'all to them all!
