he originally lived in another clan by the name of cloudclan, but joined diamondclan simply because he wanted to, and granitestar (roachstar's father) said "what the hell, sure". hazyspeck reportedly also considered joining the following "clans": blade of grass-clan, dot on a specific ladybug's wing-clan, and northern pocket gopher-clan.
